Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Complex behaviors govern our singular and coupled attitudes toward money today. Forget that we’re in one of the longest and deepest recessions in the country’s history. Focus instead on what dollars mean to you and your partner. Price (Money Magic, 2003) admits it’s one of the trickiest topics around. After all, if you don’t admit to yourself that your money relationship is somewhat askew, it’s even more difficult to discuss that with your partner. She makes that conversation somewhat easier through a series of exercises (e.g., How would you describe money if it were your lover? Determine your enough or how much money you need), a typology of eight different money personalities, from innocent and warrior to tyrant and magician, and ways to respond to subjects like incurring debt, spending versus saving, and mingling finances (or not). The book concentrates on the psychology of understanding inherited patterns and the best responses to continue an open dialogue, with a few pragmatic tips thrown in. With more than 50 percent of today’s divorces caused by the almighty dollar, Price gives much to think about. --Barbara Jacobs

When I got on to write my review, I discovered that only a few copies are left for sale, so I'm glad I got mine right away. This is the third book by Deborah Price that I've seen. The book has some of the earlier material in condensed form, money archetypes, but expands on how money plays out in relationships. My partner and I are interested in cooperative community, and have been using the rightening of our finances as a couple as our own laboratory for examining the blockages that come up over cooperation. The basics about sharing, setting budgets, living richly while living reasonably below your means, and investing are detailed in this book in ways I haven't seen anywhere else. We've begun some of the unique exercises and are already finding greater courage to make much-needed changes.

The Heart of Money by Deborah L. Price is a book to help couples with their financial issues. Money is often a touchy subject for couples, and this book helps to ease the subject matter to help both individuals with their money as a couple.

The Heart of Money is packed with strategies and exercises for a couple to do that focuses on their finances. The overall message that I got out of it was that money should be talked about in a healthy and positive way, even if there are financial problems that need to be dealt with.

Deborah L. Price (what a perfect last name for her) writes this book with compassion and understanding. She truly wants to help people push past and fix their financial issues, especially when it comes to relationships. She is authentic and the suggestions and tips she shares with us in this book can really help. There are many real life examples of how the author's clients were helped by these tips, and it is highly encouraging as a reader to see this.

Overall, I think that is a very good book to read for couples that need to have that conversation about money and their finances. I think that single people could also benefit from reading it too though, and they'll be better prepared for that conversation about money in their next relationship.

Wow! Deborah Price has written a book that can help couples understand and deal with money like no other book I have read. As a relationship therapist I have been looking for a book that helps couples understand the power of money and how it can help and heal their relationship.

The Heart Of Money provides couples a platform in which to communicate about money. It also provides essential tools to work with on a daily basis.

Although I enjoyed the entire book for its exceptional value....the "money types" were especially intriguing to me. The money types help us to see how we are hardwired and the workings of our unconscious patterns related to money. I have not found this type of description of the archetypes anywhere. Powerful and transformative.

If you are a therapist this is a must have for your therapy tool box. It will provide you with skills on how to help couples navigate the sometimes complex money dynamics.

If you are a couple this is a powerful self-help book that will change your relationship with money forever.

Thank you Deborah for your brilliance and exceptional work.

For couples who want to disentangle from old patterns around money. Excellently researched and easy to understand. Exercises will help bring awareness to a subject that is integral to our daily lives and relationships but have not yet had information about how to manage. The focus is on the truth of who you are and how to best support that.

Deborah has developed a very intuitive process to help you define your personality type as it relates to money. I also went to her workshop and found her system to be a cross of meyers brigg personality typing with a money angle. I really believe in it.

This book presents a lot of interesting exercises and experiments to help couples learn more about why they disagree on money--and what to do about it. What I especially liked is the recognition that money issues rarely are JUST about money; instead, they reflect our personalities, our long-buried fears or fantasies, our emotions and spirit. So Price is wise to approach all of this in a way that is emotional and spiritual as well as practical. We found that some chapters were irrelevant for us; however, most of the book was worthwhile--and it's not quite like any other money book OR relationship book I've come across.
