Book Description

ADULT CONTEMPORARY ROMANTIC SUSPENSE containing language, violence, and sexual content not suitable for readers under 18.
Heart-pounding passion and razor-sharp suspense abound in this gripping novel of a woman fighting for her very life. Ex-Special Forces operative Chase O'Malley is colossally bored with the tedium of civilian life. When wealthy Hank Keswick offers him a generous sum to kidnap his fugitive trophy wife, Larissa Santos, and transport her from Charleston S.C. back to Southern California, Chase welcomes the opportunity to go on yet another "mission", unaware that his new client is really Brian Sparrow, the serial killer Larissa Santos barely survived two years ago. Larissa quickly perceives that she has nothing to fear from her ski-masked abductor although - instinctively knowing that Sparrow is the engineer behind her kidnapping - she is determined to escape at any cost. Warned by Larissa's "husband" that she's a compulsive liar and an Oscar-worthy actress, Chase refuses to believe he's delivering her into harm's way. As Chase transports Larissa clear across the continent, neither one anticipates the intense attraction that develops between them despite their mutual antagonism, an attraction so intense that it crackles with sexual electricity. Will Larissa be able to convince Chase that he's delivering her to a man who wants her dead? If not, will she somehow manage to survive a second encounter with serial-killer Brian Sparrow? Will FBI Special Agent Jarvis succeed in sending Chase to prison for the rest of his life? The compelling characters, sexual tension, suspense, action, passion, and intrigue combine to create a rousing, edge-of-your-seat romantic thriller with plot twists that will keep readers mesmerized until the very last page.

Five Star Reviews:
??? The Heart Has Reasons" by Martine Marchand blew me away! This debut novel provided me with a little bit of everything: mystery/suspense, murder, love, steamy passion, laughter, tears and, of course, intense, edge-of-your-seat drama! I have to say it's the BEST book that I've read in the year of 2013! In fact, it's now has the elite honor of being one of my all-time favorites!
??? I loved the story, it was nothing like I expected, it was full of surprises, thrills and chills. Martine Marchand in this book explores themes of fear, strength and power.
??? This suspense story was absolutely amazing! It gripped me from the beginning. It has everything from angst, mystery, action, romance to kick ass main characters. The hero and heroine have incredible chemistry. This is a unique and detailed story. It had me on the edge of my seat!
??? I found this novel to be exceptional. It kept me on edge throughout the entire book. The author has extraordinary writing skills, which tells me that I would definitely read her next book. The characters along with every word in the entire story seemed to be carefully selected to provide an excellent read.
??? I was blown away by this book. It was written intelligently, professionally, and engagingly. I just loved the writing style, I was right there inside the story.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

As a lover of contemporary romance, romantic suspense, and romantic thrillers, Martine found that many of the stories she read tended to leave her unsatisfied. The women too often played the passive victim, while the men, usually due to some simple misunderstanding, treated the heroines with an utter lack of respect or, worse, downright contempt. And although the authors would describe the protagonists love for one another - to Martine at least - their love rarely felt genuine or credible. Determined to write the novel she wished to read, she published "The Heart Has Reasons" to rave reviews, and is now hard at work on her second novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic November 4, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is my first ever review on Amazon. I read a couple of books every week. I thought this book was superb so hence this maiden voyage into reviewing.
The Heart has Reasons cleverly dovetails numerous genres, e.g action, thriller, humour, suspense, mystery, inspirational and literary fiction- bringing the best of all these genres together. There is some eroticism and violence but it is intinsic to plot and character revelation.I freqently skim through pages in book but I read all of this book.Every page was interesting I read it slowly trying to make it last as long as possible. I often feel that I have read a book before as it may be similar in plot or style to something else I perused- but not this book.

The characters personalities are revealed through their actions, conversations and the observations of each other. The heroine is portrayed as more intelligent and resourceful than the hero - which is extremely rare. Also for much of the book he displays typical male behaviour of not listening to what she is telling him. The main charaters were likeable and had everyday problems, e.g. phobias. morgage, job as well as the exceptional circumstances that make the plot of the book . As in all novels you need to suspend belief. However this one uses current events( e,g Afghanistan, airport security, celbrity culture) as a background, so the plot is realistic.
The authors use of language is exceptional and she does not resort to the cliches found in many novels. I did not spot any inconsistencies in the plot or chacacter behaviour.
There is scope for sequels so I hope at least one will be written.

Larissa Santos has done everything to be better prepared than she was two years ago, when she was attacked in her own bedroom, but only managed to injure Brian Sparrow, before he escaped. Since then, she has put her life back together with a good job and great friends, she has studied martial arts and upgraded her fire arm. But none of this helps her when she finds herself drugged and shackled in the back of a van.

When Chase O'Malley returned to Southern California to report back to his client that he had found his wife, Larissa's location, he thought that would be the end of that job. But Hank Keswick surprised Chase by offering him a large sum of money to kidnap his wife and escort her back from Charleston. Keswick claims she bailed on him and their kids, when he messed up and won't let him make it right. After leaving the Special Forces, and missing the excitement of a new 'mission', Chase convinces himself to take the job.

What Chase doesn't realize is that Larissa's so-called 'husband' is in fact Brian Sparrow, her attacker she shot and injured two years ago. Larissa quickly realizes that the man ultimately responsible for her kidnapping must be Sparrow. She had always feared he would be back to finish what he had started, especially since she had hurt him.
This man in the ski mask, driving the van, doesn't feel like a threat, but he will not believe her when she tries to tell him who he is working for. So she continues to fight and plot to get free, while Chase is doing his best to keep his charge under some control without doing her any harm.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Heart Has Reasons July 23, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I really enjoyed this book. I had to keep reading to see where things would go. I really liked that the author kept going with the story line, where other authors may have just ended it after the first part and that would be it. I don't want to give anything away, so excuse the vagueness. But when you read it, you'll know what I mean. I liked both characters, both were very well developed, and done nicely throughout the book, not just all at once. And it was very nice not to read another cliffhanger book.

That said, I think the writing for the most part was excellent. However, there were a few things that got me. There was some repetitive parts, inner thoughts that had already been stated quite clearly and did not need repeating (how Chase felt about the woman he was seeing). The author also went a little nuts with the thesaurus. There were various words used throughout the book that until I looked them up, I thought they were made up. And after looking them up, they didnt seem to make sense in the sentences. It did not detract from the story, just threw me off a little.

Over all, definitely a really good book and so worth reading. The author was able to make Chase totally redeemable and Larissa was a force to reckon with.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read! July 9, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I loved the story, it was nothing like I expected, it was full of surprises, thrills and chills. Martine Marchand in this book explores themes of fear, strength and power. The story was great and it illustrated not only the passionate side where crime is committed, but also the legal side, what happens after the crime is committed, and it was really interesting for me to see the legal side, how authorities worked, trying to catch the kidnapper.

The story is told from third person POV, even if I am not a fan of that, it was still really easy to connect to the characters, and it didn't bother me at all. The story was not as dark as I expected it to be, because Chase actually never wanted to hurt Larissa, he was just really misguided. However it was still a great read.

It was really easy for me to love Chase, maybe because it was so easy to excuse his actions, but I think it was because he was so awesome - reading Larissa's mind, with superhero body and even if he believed in Sparrow, he was still so smart. Besides Chase in the story there were many other loveable and interesting characters. I cried, I laughed, I was angry and shocked, but in the end I just couldn't wait for Chase to get together with Larissa ...

Great read!

More About the Author

Martine Marchand's mother began reading to her while Martine was still in diapers, instilling in her a deep and abiding love of books. After graduating high school she joined the Air Force and was subsequently stationed in San Antonio, Texas. After her four-year enlistment was up, she stayed there for another eight, then moved to Milan, Italy and, later, to Mission Viejo, California. She eventually returned to her hometown where she met her husband and soul mate.

Martine reads everything from science fiction and fantasy to westerns and, although she particularly loves romance, many of the stories tend to leave her unsatisfied. The heroines too often play the passive victim, and the heroes, usually due to some simple misunderstanding, treat the heroines with an utter lack of respect or, even worse, downright contempt. And although we are "told" that the protagonists love one another - to Martine at least - their love rarely "feels" genuine or credible.

After the death of her husband, writing became her way of recovering from the crushing grief. She published "The Heart Has Reasons" to rave reviews, and is now hard at work on her second novel.

Martine has no children, unless you count her two highly spoiled pit bulls. When not writing, she's lifting weights, doing yoga, gardening, playing video games, or spending quality time with her Kindle. She loves to hear from both readers and other writers, and can be found on Facebook.
