Will Sloane Carlisle Become the Next Chandler Bride?,
This review is from: The Heartbreaker (Hardcover)
Brought up as a senator's daughter, Sloane Carlisle was living a fairytale life. Close to her mothers, father and twin sisters, her busy life in Washington D.C. left her little time to contemplate what she might be missing.Until one day she overhears a horrible secret: the man she thought was her father, Michael Carlisle, really isn't. And to make things worse, Michael's right-hand man wants Sloane's real father out of the picture. Desperate to warn her biological father of the threat, Sloane finds herself in out-of-the way Yorkshire Falls. Immediately welcomed into the small-town atmosphere, she is jolted when she runs into a man she had a one-night stand with, Chase Chandler. Seeing Chase brings back all of her feelings in a rush, especially when he offers to help her. But will he live up to his nickname of 'the heartbreaker' or will he make all her dreams come true? And will she be able to find her father in time to save him? The Heartbreaker is a comical, light-hearted romance about a couple that clearly should be together even though they fight it. With a hint of mystery thrown in to make the courtship even more difficult, it makes the reader root for the couple even more. From an on-again, off-again affair, to a meddling mother, to a choice between career and family, The Heartbreaker keeps the pages turning until the happily-ever-after ending.

The Heartbreaker by Carly Phillips was absolutely fabulous, and my heart was broken when I realized I finished my last book about the gorgeous Chandler brothers. :( We learned in The Bachelor that Raina Chandler was determined to see her three sons happily married, and she was willing to do whatever it takes to make them take the leap and start providing her with grandchildren. She decided the best way to accomplish her goals was to pretend to have a serious heart problem. Whether it was her planning or fate that brought the couples together, well never know.
When Rainas husband died, Chase Chandler became the man of the house, so he gave up all of his dreams to make sure his younger brothers could follow their hearts. Now that his mother and brothers are happy, he decides that it is finally his turn. Shortly after making this decision, he meets Sloan and is smitten by her. Since Sloane was on a mission to find out the truth about her father, the last thing she wanted was to fall in love. The path to happiness isnt always where we think it should be. Chase certainly didnt want to give up his freedom and Sloane didn't want a man running away from the thoughts of a family......... but did I mention the smitten part?
This is my favorite book in the Chandler series. It wasnt as funny as the first two books, but it was a lot more suspenseful. Carly Phillips was able to blend humor, suspense, romance and enough steam to fog up the windows.

What a disappontment...,

This review is from: The Heartbreaker (Hardcover)
I was so looking forward to Chase's story after brothers Roman (The Bachelor) and Rick (The Playboy) were happily married off.. The basic premise of the trilogy is that mother Raina fakes a heart condition to force her 3 handsome sons to marry and beget children.Heartbreaker starts out with black-haired, blue-eyed Chase bedding a gorgeous redhead he met in a bar. This is out of character for both the steadfast, small-town reporter and for Sloan Carlisle, daughter of a political Senator. She was confused and depressed that night, after learning a tragic secret and so turned to Chase for a one-night stand. So, I thought, this is going to be one of those fall into lust first, fall into love later stories. OK. Then by coincidence, don't hero and heroine meet up together in his small hometown, as he's been appointed her "Protector" by Sloane's mother. I knew this was coming but it seemed contrived which is why I just couldn't cozy up to Chase and Sloane as characters or as a couple. Chase had a lot of good, Romance Hero qualities: he was handsome, loyal, ethical and shy. But Sloane was very two-dimensional. She jumped into bed with the hero one hour after meeting him - I find that more of a turn-off than a turn-on. There's a Biker Bar scene that didn't come off as sexy either, just weird. Sloane's emotions flit from spacey to "come-hither" to sobbing within a matter of minutes. She did not have a consistent personality, nor did the author let it develop. She ran hot/cold and saw things as black and white and that's probably why I didn't care for her. I usually love to "visit" with characters from previous books but here I found the Rick/Kendall, Roman/Charlotte, Raina/Eric stories just got in the way of an already slow-moving romance between the main protagonists. So - go ahead and read Heartbreaker just so you can cap off the Chandler brothers story. But I was diappointed by the rushed, irrelevant plot and flat characters (Sloane). Try harder next time, Carly Phillips - you've got talent. Slow down, take your time and give us a humorous, heartwarming story that your many fans know you're capable of.
