Amazon.com Review

If a quick jaunt to Russia is beyond your means, The Hermitage Museum: Saint Petersburg may be the next best thing. With it, users can explore the 13-gallery museum located in the former residence of the czars and learn about the historical context in which its classical artwork was created.

The Hermitage Museum is more than a collection of electronic reproductions of great paintings and sculptures. The entire museum has been re-created so that users can roam the rooms, seeing the creations displayed as they are in real life. Clicking on a painting or statue provides a close-up look at the work, and a virtual tour guide offers facts about the artist, subject matter, and the piece itself. Some of the works come with detailed animations that break down their elements, providing an in-depth look at the techniques used in each piece's creation.

Clearly no computer program can compete with the experience of seeing a brilliant work of art at close range. However, The Hermitage Museum can educate and inform art lovers, giving them an opportunity to study the Saint Petersburg collection however they choose: clicking from painting to painting, prowling the virtual galleries, or taking a themed tour of related works from different parts of the museum. This flexibility and ease of use make it possible to delve into the Saint Petersburg collection in a way that would be difficult to achieve through a single museum visit. --Alyx Dellamonica

i never get sick of just strolling around in my hermitage's hallways and looking at any painting i choose in detail along with getting all the info i need just by clicking on any painting hangging on the wall. i love its beatifal selection of composers thats perfect for this virtual environment. i still to this day find beautiful paintings that ive missed which makes every visit to the hermitage a interesting one. myself being an artist i definately think this is a very helpful tool in giving you the freedom to sit and take in everything a real museum could give you without the guards and crowds of tourists. A VERY GOOD INVESTMENT.

Victory or Montparnasse Multimedia keeps producing high-quality CDs. With the rapid progress in technology, the art CDs get better and better. The Hermitage Museum (1998) is somewhat similar in format and structure with Musee d'Orsay (1996) and is even more flexible in giving you a vivid virtual experience and appreciation of the Museum. The animated features, the music and the historical background are all excellent and give you a more in-depth understanding. It is interesting to listen to the history and vicissitudes of the Museum since 1682, with fires and three evacuations, including the one in 1941 before the 900 days' siege by the Nazis. You can even send a certain number of art pictures as postcards, e.g. Madonna Litta, by da Vinci, through the internet. I highly recommend this CD of one of the greatest museums to art lovers and any visitor of St. Petersburg and the Hermitage.
