Book Description

August 14, 2012 10 and up Heroes of Olympus
What dangers do runaway demigods Luke and Thalia face on their way to Camp Half-Blood? Are Percy and Annabeth up to the task of rescuing stolen goods from a fire-breathing giant who doesn't take kindly to intruders? How exactly are Leo, Piper, and Jason supposed to find a runaway table, dodge a band of party-loving Maenads (who just might be a little psychotic), and stave off a massive explosion...all in one hour or less?

With his trademark wit and creativity, Rick Riordan answers these questions and more in three never-before-seen short stories that provide vital back-story to the Heroes of Olympus and Percy Jackson books. Original art, enlightening character interviews and illustrated profiles, puzzles, and a quiz add to the fun in this action-packed collection that is sure to delight legions of loyal fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars Even better than I expected! August 14, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Next to The Mark Of Athena, this was my most awaited book of the year. The instant my friends and I got hold of the ebook, the four of us crowded around one kindle to read~ and squeal~ over the it. I had high expectations for this book, and, well, it completely exceeded them!
To start off, we get an awesome story taken from Luke Castellan's own diary, from the days when he and Thalia were on the run. It's action packed and FULL of witty humour. Luke has a very different voice than Percy's, and I think that after having read this, many people will like him more. And is Thalia/Luke really a thing...? Riordan answers all of our questions in it, so read the book to find out!
Then, we have "Percy Jackson And The Staff Of Hermes", from the days when Percy and Annabeth had just started dating. It's their one month anniversary, and Percy just might have forgotten... Do any of you miss the cute and dumb Percy from the earlier series? Well, he's back and better than ever! I love Percy and Annabeth's banter, and this funny and sweet story~ full with a date, a monster, a god and two particularily amusing snakes~ just makes me anticipate The Mark Of Athena even more than my mental health can manage.
Thirdly, there is a story involving Leo, Jason and Piper. Leo's really busy building the Argo II, but no thanks to a walking table who likes to be polished only in a certain way, he runs into very big trouble threatening to blow up Bunker Nine. There are crazy stalkerish psycho nymphs who worship Mr. D, Jason and Piper are officially a couple, and Leo is hilarious.
Some activities and an interview involving the aforementioned snakes are scattered around the book. Then in the end, Rick Riordan's son wrote a small story, also in the theme of demigods. I didn't like that story as much as the rest, but that was probably because it had completely new characters in it.
All in all, I really liked this book. My friends and I "awwwww"~ed a lot, especially during the first two stories. So if you can't wait for The Mark Of Athena to come out, or want your faith in The Heroes Of Olympus restored, read this book!

3.0 out of 5 stars Three parts enjoyable. August 18, 2012
By Sarah
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book is basically divided into two parts: what Rick Riordan wrote and what his son Haley wrote.

Everything Rick wrote was, as usual, charming and funny and exciting and cute. He's one of my favorite writers because he knows how to balance the light and the dark, and it never gets too dark, even in life or death situations. His books are perfect "escape" books. They're fluffy, and I love that. I know I'm going to enjoy myself no matter which world or character he's writing.

I would have given this book four stars, but the very last story, "Son of Magic", knocked one off. Haley is a great writer for 16, and his stuff is years ahead what I was writing when I was 16, but the story just didn't fit. The main protagonist wasn't a demigod, and wasn't very likeable even at the end of the story. He uses a gun to try and kill a monster, and for some reason the appearance of guns, working guns that shoot bullets, in this world was disconcerting to me. It's almost too "real", and it knocks the tone down from exciting to a bit dark. Especially when the main protagonist kicks a monster's jaw so hard it flies off her face (as dust, but still). I also didn't like how Hecate was portrayed as a white-robed Virgin Mary wannabe praying at a church altar. What's that supposed to tell us? It's left unanswered but I definitely don't like the idea of these mythical Greek gods worshiping the Christian god. That sends a bad message.

Haley did not write badly. He knew how to pace and describe things, and it didn't feel clunky and choppy. It just didn't fit the tone of the world his father has established. He might be trying to inject some maturity into it, but I don't want that at all. I'll stick with Rick.
