About the Author

Using the techniques described in this book, William Radford went from being completely broke and saddled with debt to being financially independent in just over 10 years. He was able to do this by developing powerful money habits and eliminating the habitual money drains common to so many of us.

The Hero's Journey makes for an interesting read, while also providing some excellent advice along the way. While the author immediately points out that there is nothing new in this book, it does a great job of reminding us all of the smart, basic ideas we all should be following.

"There is nothing new in this book." This is how William Radford begins The Hero's Journey to Financial Independence, and he is absolutely right. This is not a "Get Rich Quick" book, nor one that claims to reveal "secrets to wealth". Instead, it is a distillation of tried-and-true advice aimed at people who feel they are stuck in a rut of "just getting by" and those who know they should be able to do better.

Radford uses The Hero with a Thousand Faces, Joseph Campbell's story of the hero's journey, to structure his book. In a low-key, friendly and readable style, Radford encourages you to take the first of many steps to becoming financially independent, where you no longer have to worry about the next paycheck. The first third of the book is mostly motivational - he doesn't start with the serious advice until after that, but I guess he wants to get you in the right frame of mind. Along the way he quotes extensively from such varied sources as George Lucas ("Star Wars") and the Twitter feed "(Stuff) My Dad Says".

When I got to the part where he starts on "The Five Rituals of Wealth", I recognized many of the things I had done to become, well not wealthy, but financially comfortable. So I, at least, am a demonstration of the success of Radford's journey. Radford is unsparing in his praise of those who went before him, and cites many books on financial topics that seem well worth reading.

Not everyone will be able to act on every one of the ideas in The Hero's Journey, but if you do at least half of them you will indeed be much better off. I know, because it worked for me.

The Hero's Journey from Joseph Campbell's take on mythology (The Hero with a Thousand Faces (The Collected Works of Joseph Campbell)) seems like an exotic approach to financial well-being, but it does work here. The youth sets out on a great quest, becoming a man in the process after overcoming great difficulties, descending into the depths of hell, winning the girl, and returning home with praise from all quarters. It's Star Wars, The Hobbit, and going from college debt to home ownership and a secure retirement.

Great idea and well executed as well.
