The application of honest historical analysis to the question of the Bible and religion is "not exactly" compatible with uncritical traditional belief. That is the basic point of the book, and the subject is explored in various aspects. For anyone who is ready to move on from an uncritical to an informed view of the subject, this is a helpful book.

This book may be over 40 years old, but it still resonates. Profound insights abound. Traditional Christian faith founders on the inescapability of the methods of historico-critical history/theology.

Provides an excellent overview of the chasm that needs to be bridged between faith and historical knowledge. A recommended read for seminary and post-graduate biblical studies students.
