Editorial Reviews

Review

?This is a delightful as well as an important book. It contains a wealth of material gathered from the most authoritative sources. The material is selected with skill and discussed with understanding. The author has known how to provide interest and insight, one would think, for the layman as well as valuable information and an equally valuable integration of available data for the practicing musician.?-Yale Review --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Format: Hardcover
While copyrighted in 1942, this small book addresses the problems facing performers of Western Art music. Interpretation and Performance Practices is the darling of academia today, and the "experts" in this field demand adherence to their orthodxy. To them, Dorian's effort is viewed as "quaint". But to mere mortals, this book is still an indispensable tool for finding one's way through the wilderness of stylistic practices in art music

Although slightly dated in some respects (mostly in terms of recording/reproduction technology) this remains a wonderful and valuable book. The interpretive problems and discussions remain just as relevant, perhaps even more so due to today's increasing interest in authentic performance practice. It should be read by every classical music student and performer, as well as by listeners who wish to deepen their understanding of how music is interpreted and performed. The introduction by Eugene Ormandy is worth reading on its own.
