Editorial Reviews

Mobster. Gunfighter. Womanizer. Charlie Valentine (Raymond J. Barry) is living a life of crime and is determined to score one last big payoff. However, when the perfect crime goes bad, Charlie flees to Los Angeles to get help from his estranged son, Danny (Michael Weatherly). Since Danny desires the power of his gangster father, he attempts to make his way up the ladder in the seedy underworld, pulling one heist after another. In this story of lies and betrayal, unexpected qualities in a cast of unsavory characters are revealed in the end.

3.0 out of 5 stars Average Straight to Video Crime Flick December 5, 2010
By Compay
Let me start by pointing out that most of the five-star reviews for this film are by people who suspiciously have reviewed only one movie on Amazon: this one. So possibly fake reviews aside, Charlie Valentine is a fairly average low-budget crime movie.

Pros: Raymond J. Barry delivers a great acting performance as Charlie Valentine, an aging gangster that's forced to flee town after a heist goes bad. Lisa Catara is painfully sexy as Valentine's love interest, though I was disappointed she wasn't used more in the film. There's also a great deal of eye candy thanks to a number of strip club scenes (a requirement for straight to DVD movies these days). The score for the film was surprisingly good, and the cinematography was better than most Redbox flicks.

Cons: For all of the big names that appear in this film, the overwhelming majority are underused. Tom Berenger is front and center on the DVD, despite getting a grand total of two minutes of screen time the entire movie. Keith David has a "blink and you missed him" role as well. James Russo of Donnie Brasco fame serves up a flat performance as the mob boss on the hunt for Valentine. Steven Bauer, who has packed on a good 80 pounds since filming Traffic, delivers a forgettable "where's my check" acting performance.

The trailers make the film seem so much better than it really is, and even the Amazon description of the film isn't very accurate. And for supposedly being an experienced gunslinger, Valentine constantly has his guard down around his enemies.

Charlie Valentine is worth renting just for Raymond Barry's performance alone. Otherwise, it's a run of the mill low-budget gangster flick filled with plenty of plot holes, and it doesn't really stand out. Give this one a rent before buying.

4.0 out of 5 stars GRITTY GANGSTERS November 3, 2010
Most of the time Hollywood produces films about gangsters awash in glitz and glitter, prone to living in the fanciest of houses and always attempting to either go legit or at least try and do something for their community. But this has little to do with reality. If you don't believe that read WISEGUY by Nick Pileggi. The life of a mobster is never as glamorous as they would have you believe and their sole focus is themselves.

But there is the rare occasion when the seamier side of the gangster life is portrayed. And it usually is done so due to lack of money and time given a film maker. Such is the case with the film THE HITMAN DIARIES: CHARLIE VALENTINE directed and written by Jesse Johnson.

The story revolves around Charlie Valentine (Raymond J. Barry), a low level mobster looking at old age and the possibility of getting out of the game. To do so he'll have to make one last monumental score. His choice is to rob Rocco (James Russo), one of the top mob members. When the robbery goes bad and his men are all killed, Charlie hits the road in Rocco's prized possession, a classic Cobra.

With no one on the east coast to help him Charlie heads to the only place he thinks he'll be safe, his son's home in Los Angeles. Danny (Michael Weatherly) is doing okay for himself. Having beat drug addiction and a bad stint in prison with the help of the woman in his life, Jenny (Maxine Bahns), he's getting by on parole and working as help in a local strip joint. When Charlie shows at his doorstep, he's glad to see him.

Charlie was the man he always dreamed of being. Plenty of gorgeous women around and never tied to one, money always at hand and the "good life" always being enjoyed. While his parents separated early on, Danny always wanted to be like Charlie.

3.0 out of 5 stars Hit men with a Heart November 20, 2013
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
I picked this because I like Michael Weatherly a lot. This movie certainly casts him in a new light -- at least for us NCIS fans! He's a hit man's/enforcer's son who has never really known his father. They meet up again when his father is looking for one last score before he retires. It's no surprise when Weatherly's character (who is a thug for a bookie/stripper club owner) wants to strike out with dad.

The acting is good, especially Weatherly who is believable as a needy, formerly-fatherless son looking for the big time. There's even some heart to it. Not a great movie, but not bad for the genre. I especially recommend it if you are a Michael Weatherly fan, but if you're a Tom Berringer fan, skip it. He's in the movie for less than three minutes.

3.0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time. November 14, 2013

I didn't think this was one of Tom Berenger's best movies, not because of his acting, but the story. Even being a fan of his, I'd recommend a pass.

4.0 out of 5 stars It's a mobster movie, what can ya' expect? March 15, 2013
By Terrie
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
I liked this movie. It was a mobster movie focusing on an aging crook that lived longer than he thought he would. It's a classic story of guys too lazy to go to school, wanting quick money and lots of it, trapped in a juvenile behavior world, and thinking that mean and tough is a way to respect. Take, take, take and no giving. Kinda' like the rulers of today.
The movie showed the seediness of this existence and what these guys could expect in their limited views of life. Stuff that James Cagney portrayed so well. I watched this story and felt a little superior. Not too much, though; life can turn on a dime on us all.
Mostly, I bought this move to see Michael Wetherly in a different type of acting role. I am a great fan of his and the entire NCIS team of actors.
