Amazon.com Review

In the district of Shire in the Third Age of Middle Earth live a curious group of individuals called hobbits. Just three feet tall, with a layer of shaggy fur covering their feet, these creatures prefer to live underground, and until recent years, had stayed away from the ruin and despair that had befallen the rest of the world. In The Hobbit, we were introduced to one such character, Bilbo Baggins. In this sequel, Baggins' story continues as Bilbo's nephew Frodo attempts to destroy a Ring--an evil object able to debase even the most pure of heart--before the wicked Sauron. In this first volume of The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, Tolkien lays the groundwork for one of the most enduring tales of the battle between good and evil written in modern times. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

More About the Author

J.R.R. Tolkien (1892.1973), beloved throughout the world as the creator of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, was a professor of Anglo-Saxon at Oxford, a fellow of Pembroke College, and a fellow of Merton College until his retirement in 1959. His chief interest was the linguistic aspects of the early English written tradition, but even as he studied these classics he was creating a set of his own.

On this cassette, J.R.R. Tolkien, the author of "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of The Rings" reads one chapter from "The Hobbit", 'Riddles in the dark'. He also sing his own poems from "The Lord of the ring" (the first book).
A great thing for Tolkien-fans, but probably not a thing for the usual reader. The length of the cassette is approx. 60 minutes.

I loved it. This is for all Tolkien fans out there. This is for anyone who loves to get lost in the tales Tolkien entwines in your mind. Close your eyes and listen. You will find yourself in another world. Let your mind wonder on a journey through times forgotten, fighting monsters and finding treasures. I Reccomend this book for anyone, young or old, who enjoys a wonderful fantasy adventure. Again, Bravo to Tolkien and his wonderful tales!!!!

Knowing the author, is there more to say? The beginning sci-fi/fantasy reader will become absorbed in THE HOBBIT's easy to follow storyline. The enormous detail can become cumbersome, but is easily skipped. Once you've read it and loved it, you can read it again and again over the years and each time find something you missed which adds to the richness of the story. You'll never be satisfied without knowing the fate of the ring and thus will follow the same patterns as you read THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RINGS trilogy. Even further still, return to the story of the dwarves in the SILMARILLION. You will NEVER tire of these stories!

IF you have been longing for the Tolkien collection but thought it was too expencive, here's a less expencive version which will provide you about as much as you could want. the exserpt about Gollum is here, thus making your listening more pleasurable. If you're a gollum fan as I am. You'll enjoy this one and the quality is nothing to sneze at my precious.
