The Hobbit
Six Different Editions

Pick the version of the Hobbit that best suits your needs.

A great modern classic and the prelude to The Lord of the Rings, with an iconic cover inspired by Tolkien’s designs.

This charming deluxe pocket-sized edition contains the complete unabridged text and features a beautiful leatherette cover and gilt-edging. The perfect gift for little Hobbits everywhere!

A beautiful gift edition of J.R.R. Tolkien's enchanting tale, fully illustrated by Jemima Catlin.

This deluxe hardcover edition of J.R.R. Tolkien's classic prelude to his Lord of the Rings trilogy contains a short introduction by Christopher Tolkien, a reset text incorporating the most up-to-date corrections, and all of Tolkien’s own drawings and full-color illustrations, including the rare “Mirkwood” piece.

The text in this 372-page paperback edition is based on that first published in Great Britain by Collins Modern Classics (1998), and includes a note on the text by Douglas A. Anderson (2001).

This deluxe collector's edition of Tolkien's modern classic is boxed and bound in green leatherette with gold and red foil rune stamping on the spine and cover. The text pages are printed in black with green accents. It includes five full page illustrations in full color and many more in two colors, in addition to Thror's map -- all prepared by the author.

From the Illustrated Edition of The Hobbit

Dwarves
"[This was] in fact no other than the great Thorin Oakenshield himself, who was not at all pleased at falling flat on Bilbo's mat with Bifur, Bofur, and Bombur on top of him."
Gandalf
"All that the unsuspecting Bilbo saw that morning was an old man with a staff. He had a tall pointed blue hat, a long grey cloak, a silver scarf over which his long white beard hung down below his waist, and immense black boots."
Smaug
"Smaug lay, with wings folded like an immeasurable bat, turned partly on one side, so that the hobbit could see his underparts and his long pale belly crusted with gems and fragments of gold from his long lying on his costly bed."
--This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

There are also many illustrations from other editions of the book.

The story itself is simply wonderful, Tolkien does such a wonderful job creating his world and characters you feel as if you are there with them.
Crazyhorse
J.R.R Tolkien's The Hobbit is one of the best book of the lord of the rings saga.

I just wanted to take the time to update anyone who is interested in purchasing this illustrated edition of The Hobbit. As you probably know, there aren't many illustrated editions of the hobbit and most that are illustrated aren't all that incredible. So far, my favorite edition has been the one by Alan Lee. I must say, it's hard to top his work. Alan Lee really helped bring the story to life for me when I first read this incredible adventure by Tolkien. However, because I believe that The Hobbit is a tale directed at the hearts of children and adults that are young at heart, I believe that Jemima Catlin's illustrated edition has topped even the great Alan Lee's. First off, the quality of this book is excellent. The book has been wrapped in cloth so the book feels high quality and soft to the touch. Also, the cover has a beautiful illustration from the book that includes carefully placed gold etching on the leaves, title, and author's name. This really gives the book a nice luster and shine. The book doesn't come with a book jacket and honestly I think that was smart based off of how high quality the book feels and looks. It just doesn't need a cheap paper jacket to cover such a beautiful looking book.

The illustrations that are presented in the book are a thing of beauty. Not only are there a great many (every two or three pages or so) but they are incredibly colorful and really pop when you look at them. I do think the illustrator's style is to appear more colorful and simple at first glance, but at the same time you will look at the illustrations carefully and see the amount of time and effort that she put into this work. I love this style of simplicity and use of color.

I've bought a number of editions of The Hobbit since I first read the book in the early 1970's. This is the most beautiful I've seen. Very nice cloth hardcover that look's like it was printed in the 1930's. Illustrations galore. Wish they would do something like this with each of the three volumes of Lord of the Rings. Very nice.

5 stars because the Hobbit is one of my favorite all time stories.
5 stars because the illustrations are great, different from what I expect, different from the movie, but still true to the story.
5 stars because the print is larger and easier for a younger reader to absorb.
I like.

I must admit at the outset that I haven't finished reading the German translation yet (I'm referring to the paperback here), but so far it's as fun a read as the English. I've had a couple minor issues with the translation so far, but they're fairly trivial and may be perfectly justified by parts farther on in the book.

I really enjoy reading English-language books in translation (from Watership Down to Red Dragon) and have also read a good deal of German lit in English, and as translations go this seems to have lost little of the "feel" of Tolkien. That means it can be both dense and playful at once without being tiring. A masterful "Erzählung" in any language (that I can read, at least)!

I am still occasionally surprised to find out that there is anyone out there who isn't intimately already familiar with Tolkien's books, but then I find that there are some who aren't.

This edition has decent sized text for easy ready for younger readers (I bought this edition for an 8 year old with advanced reading skills), as well as for my own eyes, which aren't what they used to be.

If you are firmly wedded to the film version, you may be surprised to read the original. Likewise, if you are expecting the same artwork (or photo stills) of the film, this is different. Michael Hague's work reminds me mostly of Arthur Rackham's ethereal qualities combined with Tolkien's own style.

I bought 'Der Kleine Hobbit' in Stuttgart to help me retain my German. I purchased this 'sonderausgabe' (special edition) audio book so I don't forget what German sounds like. It absolutely serves that purpose. However, it is abridged which makes it difficult to follow along in the text which is how I reinforce my German usage. Someone who wants to enjoy Der Hobbit and not spend the additional time of listening through an unabridged edition will do well to buy this version. If you want an audio rendition of the entire text, I would recommend looking elsewhere. It is produced with very solid production values and is certainly enjoyable and the passages it skips past do not harm the overall intregity of Tolkien's story. If you are an avid Tolkien fan who wants to explore his text in German, this may not be the right choice for you; but if you just want to spend some time listening to a quality rendition, this does the job.

The story is a classic that I, sadly, did not experience until I was in college. I am currently reading it with my 8 year old and he absolutely loves it. Since I already owned the book in paperback, my main motivation for buying this was because it is a collectors item that I intend on passing down. Aside from the fact that it looks great on a bookcase alongside my 50th Anniversary edition of Lord of the Rings, it's the little things that make this purchase worth it: runes on the cover, gilded pages, the beautiful illustrations. Definitely something to collect if you are like me and got in on the Tolkien game pretty late but want to collect items that, like the Shire, were built to last.
