Editorial Reviews

Review

'Lavishly illustrated with hundreds of behind-the-scenes photos. Fans of Middle-earth will love it.' Sunday Mirror 'The book screams "access", and does a great job bringing the filming alive' SFX 'Packed with exclusive information, this book concentrates on interviews with the cast and crew... ideal for someone interested in moviemaking as much as the story of The Hobbit.' Hull Daily Mail --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

About the Author

More About the Author

I have been a professional writer for thirty years and a freelance broadcaster for the BBC in London for almost as long.

My career began as a radio-writer with dramatisations for the BBC which include serialisations of J. R. R. Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings", C. S. Lewis' "The Chronicles of Narnia" and Mervyn Peake's "Titus Groan" and "Gormenghast" for which I won a coveted Sony Radio Award. I have also made radio programmes on a wide variety of topics from the history of magic to the crimes of Jack the Ripper! Series of note include "A Century of Cinema", "The Sound of Movies" and "'Ain't No Mickey Mouse Business!"

My specialist interests have always been film (in particular animation) and children's literature and I have broadcast numerous radio and TV programmes and written several books about both these topics.

For the best part of a decade I presented weekly arts and film programmes on the BBC's domestic and World Service networks but have spent the last few years concentrating on books including a couple of best-sellers on the making of Peter Jackson's film trilogy, "The Lord of the Rings" and researching and writing that director's authorised biography, scheduled for publication in 2006.

I live in London with my life partner, a professional magician, in a house overcrowded with so many books, DVDs and CDs (not to mention all those old videos and gramophone records!) that it is seriously beginning to look like one of Amazon.com's smaller warehouses!

The book makes me want to see the movie again, just to catch some of the details they were talking about.
R. I. Mackenzie
This book is great for those looking for a behind the scenes look at the making of the first movie based on The Hobbit.
J. Grant
It had so much information on the characters, their actors, and all the people involved in making the movie magical!

This book is great for those looking for a behind the scenes look at the making of the first movie based on The Hobbit. A few thoughts:

1. This a focused on the making of the movie. It concentrates on interviews with the cast and crew, as well a technical details about effects, costumes and the like. The detail is goes into is extraordinary, and really gives you a look at all of the work that the creative team did to put this film together.
2. If you're more interested in production stills and information on the characters and setting of the movie, check out The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Visual Companion. I have this as well and it make a nice companion piece to this book.
3. In general, this is for the person who in interesting in the art of movie making as much as story and world of The Hobbit. If you're the kind of person who enjoys watching the "behind the scenes" kind of shows or DVD/Blu-Ray extras, I would recommend this book.

Several books for THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY just came out, and this is the one which gives you a behind the scenes look at the film production; that said, it is not a storybook with glossy "completed production stills", nor is it a gallery full of concept art and sketches - this is instead the book which interviews the director, production crew, and cast involved with the film and gives you a satisfying peek at the details in developing the movie and some of the work that happens on set. So, lots of shots of the crew, actors in and out of make-up, green-screen backdrops, props, partially-glimpsed sets, and so on. It's 168 pages, with a few dedicated to credits, title page, etc. As someone who likes to follow the news on the Middle Earth films, I feel the text was just the right amount of familiar info mixed with additional commentary, and I especially appreciated the space given to the various personalities working off-screen. I'd found all the behind-the-scenes books for the LORD OF THE RINGS films a real delight to page thru, and this is on par with them as the making-of companion piece.

It's worth noting that because the movies based on THE HOBBIT have been extended from two films to three, there's a lot of known cast/characters/locations not present in this book because they aren't introduced yet in the story, or are not as important to events in the first film. That said, I really enjoy Brian Sibley's effort on this, because unlike some of the making-of books that I have gotten, he presents everything the way an insider would - lots of perspectives, new faces, and covering many aspects of the production. It's easy to get lost for hours just enjoying the details.

This is a delightful book, full of background information about the cast, the set, the crew, almost everything you might want to know more about. However, I have to complain about the editing. Why do these movie tie-in books have to be rushed to publication without thorough copy editing by an actual person? Relying on Spell Check just is not acceptable, and leads to mistakes such as saying that one of the actors was not "phased" by the difficulties involved in playing a dwarf or that fabric for many of the costumes had to go through a special "dying" process. Come on, people! How much longer would it take to have someone give the manuscript a careful read to check for incorrect word usage and missing words? I gave the book a casual read over the course of a couple of days and I found at least 5 errors. And I wasn't even looking for them! However, if you don't mind about editing errors in a book, I highly recommend this one, and I'm glad I read it in spite of my complaints! It makes me want to go see the movie again.

I love this book. I have always been a fan of the books Mr. Sibley writes and this one is no different. Excellent documentation of the movie-making process and a must read for all movie/Hobbit enthusiasts.
