'A fierce and intelligent heroine, a sibling with a challenging destiny to discover, a heart-warming romance, and an X-men type school for special powers in the Emerald Isle, all add up to a superbly gripping tale. I loved Becca and can't wait to read more of her world. A fantastic read!'

"Top-notch YA Urban Fantasy"
-Christal

"What really worked for me in this story were the characters, and the intertwining relationships between them all. The back of this book might say it's about a school for people with powers, but really this book is about people, relationships, and watching them evolve."

Great characters that were well developed.

I enjoyed how well thought out the magic was, although I felt THE HOLDERS slowed down a bit too much at times in order to explain how everything worked.
Liviania
I recommend the book to young adults and women.

The Holders is total awesomeness. The characters are wonderful. This storyline is fantastic. The romance is heart-melting. Julianna Scott is an awesome writer and storyteller. I fell in love with this story. Becca is my kind of strong heroine. Alex is definitely my kind sensuous, sexy lead guy, and I adore him. Scott has penned an incredible story about a human race that has supernatural abilities. But Scott absolutely touched my heart with the beautiful romance between Becca and Alex. Alex is a just melt-your-heart-swoon worthy guy--the way he talks, touches and loves Becca--he made my heart skip a few beats. The scene between Becca and Alex at the end of this novel had me in romance heaven; their words of love and trust to each other had my heart swooning.

Becca is seventeen and hell bent on protecting her little brother Ryland, keeping him away from all the people who would like to have him committed to an institution for hearing voices. But she never expected her deadbeat dad to send two of his guys from Ireland to take Ryland away from her. One of her dad's guys, Alex, tells her that Ryland is not crazy, that he is what known as a special race called the Holders. Becca starts to trust this twenty-two year old with beautiful eyes, but there's no way she's letting her little brother go to Ireland without her. Becca thought she was going to Ireland to change her brother's life. She had no idea her life was going to get a supernatural makeover along with her falling in love with Alex.

The Holders intriguing storyline had me glued to the pages, this unique race from Ireland with their special mind powers, and Becca and Alex's beautiful romance, I'm definitely ready for the sequel. I highly recommend The Holders as a must read.

I gave up on this book two or three times during the first seventy-five pages, but I kept picking it up again, just because the writing was engaging enough and the story was interesting enough and there was so much promise that I really wanted the book to work. I'm glad I persevered.
The problem was our heroine Becca. The protective older sister of a brother, Ryland, who hears voices and who is always being dogged by child protective services, she is presented as fiercely loyal to her brother. Fine. But as the narrator of the story she indulges in unrestrained bouts of "anger", "rage", "fierce conflict" and unending drama in which she is the star and central figure. At the outset this is not at all diluted by any particularly appealing qualities, and her frequent expressions of contempt for her mother, her "rage" and "hatred" centered around her absent father, and her confrontational style all are very wearing. There's a lot of short fuses, screams, hyper-ventilating and acting out. I'm a big fan of strong heroines in middle grade and YA fiction, but this untempered and unrelenting rage just got old.
But wait. After the setup we get to the point at which Ry is called to a special school for people with his abilities, and Becca agrees to the move as long as she can accompany him. Once we get to the school the book takes off. Becca becomes more complex and engaging. We learn about Ry's abilities; we have a love interest that starts to mellow Becca out; we have some nifty scene setting and world building. We finally have additional interesting characters. The writing even gets more descriptive, relaxed and free, almost as if the author was wound up from writing so much anger and sort of relieved she could now just tell a rip-roaring story.

Oh my goodness, The Holders by Julianna Scott is a debut that is going to take the world by storm. If you are looking for a kick-ass heroine and some epic mythology wrapped up in a unique fantasy world, look no further!

I loved Becca. She was such a strong heroine – she is just so genuinely good. I loved the lengths at which she was willing to go to protect her family. Chloe was just a doll – what a sweetheart! I also really adored Alex – from the first page he walked into the book, I just loved him.

The plot of The Holders is SO NEAT. It is really unique and I loved the ideas. There are definitely some elements borrowed from other literature and Julianna Scott really makes them her own. The mythology in this one was just brilliant.

The stakes are high by the end of the book and I cannot wait to see where things go in The Seers. I was absolutely enthralled. The Holders starts out with a bang and just picks up speed throughout the entire book, never letting up.

If this is any notion of what Julianna Scott can do, I cannot wait to see what is next. The Holders was refreshing and just one heck of a good read.

Seventeen-year-old Becca is very protective of her family. Child of a divorced parents, she deeply cares about her mother and little brother Ryland, even it means sacrificing her own future. When another people visit them claiming that they can help her brother, Becca is reluctant to believe them. Especially since their long-lost better-forgotten father have sent them. But for her brother, Becca is willing to take a shot go on a trip to Ireland and St. Brigid's, a school that teaches peoples with abilities that normal person doesn't have (so called Power Holders).

Becca is not the type of heroine I could easily like. I'm a peace-and-quiet loving kind of girl, so her penchant toward temper tantrums was not something I could relate to. But I had to admire her determination, love for her family and the extremes she is willing to go to ensure their happiness. Also I loved her reactions and attitude toward romantic part of her story. There are a lot of ya novels who give love a bad name, but The Holders gives me faith that if or when I have a teenage daughter I will have a book that I can recommend to her that will give her a good role-model how love is supposed to be:
"I loved him because I knew him. Because I'd seen the man he truly was inside, and it never failed to amaze me. I loved him for his heart and his strength. For his endless compassion and his unbreakable spirit even in the face of everything he'd been trough. I loved him because he was the person I wanted to be, and I was a better person just trough the privilege of knowing him."

Except for Becca, all other characters in The Holders are not much developed. Yes, there are a lot of teachers and students at St. Brigid, but they felt rather flat to me and fairly typical.
