Editorial Reviews

Review

"Whenever I return to read Owen I find myself at least in part wondering why I spend time reading lesser things.Part of the contemporary value of Owen's work lies in the way it gives us biblical teaching and principles that can be applied to what we observe in the life of the churches today. He provides the tools we need to be discerning Christians in an undiscerning world. In the pages that follow you will find yourself quarrying theological treasures, and spiritual and pastoral riches, from the Owen Goldmine." ~ Sinclair B. Ferguson (Associate Preacher, St Peter's Free Church, Dundee, Scotland)

"I assert unhesitatingly that the man who wants to study experimental theology will find no books equal to those of Owen for complete scriptural and exhaustive treatment of the subjects they handle. If you wish to study thoroughly the doctrine of sanctification I make no apology for strongly recommending Owen on the Holy Spirit". ~ J. C. Ryle (First Bishop of Liverpool (1816 - 1900) )

John Owen is considered one of the greatest Puritan scholars (b. 1616 and died in 1683) and his work is still widely read by modern Reformed Christians. Owen warns that the most excellent things are frequently counterfeited by heretics and the fleshly; the more precious and the more pernicious is the misuse of the counterfeit. Thus the faithful are called to test the spirits inasmuch as many false prophets and false teachers have come to mislead. Owen warns that the church must be vigilant to expose and reject false light and false notions of the Spirit; the Elect must be alert for many have come to misinform concerning the character and work of the Holy Spirit.

Owen teaches: "The Spirit works on the Head of the New Creation, Jesus Christ, and thus creates the source, cause, and pattern of his working throughout the new creation, in believers."

Owen's expositions include:

- The work of the Spirit post-Pentecost
- How the Spirit persists in His work within the hearts of men
- How the Spirit convicts men of sin as He brings about godly sorrow and humble disposition in the souls of the Elect
- How the Holy Spirit regenerates and sanctifies believers and the tools God provides for such.

Owen writes: "In the representation then, of things anew to the human nature of Christ, the wisdom and knowledge of [his human nature] was objectively increased and in new trials and temptations he experimentally learned the new exercise of grace. And this was the constant work of the Holy Spirit on the human nature of Christ. He dwelt in him in fullness, for he received not him by measure. And continually, upon all occasions he gave out of his unsearchable treasures grace for exercise in all duties and instances of it.

I have read Owen before, but failed. I read through "The Death of Death in the Death of Christ." I understood most of the arguments, but I didn't get anything out of it. I tried "Communion with the Triune God" and only made it about a third of the way. In this book, Owen was both polemic and pastoral. He was defending the work in the Holy Spirit in the believer's heart and life. Many churches at that time equated sanctification as living a moral life and question that the Holy Spirit existed or if He is a person. He also explained how practical it was and how the Holy Spirit cared for you. One of my favorite parts is the assertion that our efforts and the Holy Spirit work in our sanctification are not incompatible. The Holy Spirit is prompting us, convicting us, and encouraging us to more holiness. We are to take those urgings and run with them.

I have a blog and I found myself putting quotes that struck me from almost every page. This book is not an easy read, but I found it more accessible than his other books.
