A really great mystery and adventure. The book was a decent enough action?adventure book on its own but the mystery really pushed it over the top. I started righting down predictions and clues to the story. I read it once for 5 hours straight.

The first thing about this series that got my sci-fi motor whirring was the title of book 1: THE LAST THING I REMEMBER.

But having been disappointed by the conclusions of series twice in the last 7 years, I was wary. "It's not really about what I think it's about." I thought. "I'll spend time reading the whole thing & he'll forget all about what that title sounded like. At least it won't take 30 or even 5 years."

What disappointments made me so cynical? The conclusion to THE DARK TOWER by Stephen King, which took 30 years, and the conclusion to LOST, which took 5.

But the HOMELANDERS series by Andrew Klavan did not disappoint me.

It wasn't until book 3 that I knew it was either science fiction or science fact. It was in pharmaceuticals, a field where fiction & fact keep chasing each other, so it was hard to know.

It wasn't until the final book that I was sure it was science fiction.

So if you like sci-fi there's a good chance you will like this.

This series is packed with action and suspense, and the action sequences are just stunning. I don't think you'll be able to figure out what's going to happen. At least I couldn't, and I tried. (Still I read more sci-fi than I do action/suspense, so if you read a lot of this sort of thing, maybe you'll do better than I did.)

So what were its flaws?

There are basically two.
1. The narration falters at times. I thought some of the ordinary story-telling narration, the stuff we readers rely on to make the story real, didn't quite work. When describing the girl he is falling in love with, narrator Charlie makes way too much use of the incurably lame word "nice."

2.

I started to read this series when it was in single books and was thrilled when it was offered all in one. The story is written from a 17/18 year old guys voice, which is actually quite fun - and clean. Charlie is running to find his memory and to save his life. Andrew Klavan makes this journey heart-stopping at times and humorous at others. This is a story anyone can enjoy.

This book is a fast-paced series with the adventures of Charlie West. I could not put this down. The author begins this book well and ends it amazingly. A very good series. I highly recommend this to anyone who loves a good book.

I really enjoyed this book and was intrigued by the plot. I wanted to know how a kid could one day go to bed just fine and wake the next being tortured. Eventually I found the answer and was pleased with the creativity of the answer. I also like the author didn't drag the story too much and make me impatient to have my questions answered yet there wasn't immediate gratification; you had to keep reading (which was easy to do). This was a non stop action book with some predictable and a few more surprising twists to the plot. Yes, it is a s.u.t.t. (stay up till 2) type of book. I especially like that Klavan was able to write a very entertaining book without all the gratuitous sex and language on which so many authors seem to rely.
