Book Description

March 20, 2012 8 and up 700L (What's this?)
A small toad named Tad is in grave danger.

Rumbler, a monstrous earth-eating machine, is poised to destroy his home, Toadville-by-Tumbledown. The green grass, the blue pond—everything Tad knows might disappear.

It is foretold that one brave young toad can help—but at a terrible price. Only if a toad kisses a human girl will Toadville be saved. Tad is called to rise to the challenge, disgusting though it seems. In the company of his best friend Buuurk, he sets off into the unknown.

Meanwhile, a girl named Taylor is determined to stop her grandmother’s pond from being turned into a strip mall. Perhaps, somewhere along the way, she will cross paths with a small, brave toad. Little does she know that his quest is the same as hers.

More About the Author

Every day I write. And every now and then, blissfully, I actually sell a book. I'm always thrilled when someone reads one of them and tells me how it makes them feel. When I read, I like to be moved. Good books make me cry. Great books make me laugh and cry. Think THE WORLD ACCORDING TO GARP or MICK HARTE WAS HERE. I'm a writer, teacher, and gardener. I used to be a social worker. I want to be a . . .

5.0 out of 5 stars Enchanting Story! March 28, 2012
Format:Hardcover
THE HOP is an enchanting story that touches on many themes in an absorbing, magical tale children will love. Tad, a young hopper (toad), is sent on a quest to save his home--and that of his fellow toads--from destruction. Taylor, a young girl, has a similar mission: to prevent the wild area beside her grandmother's house from being bulldozed. Although this book has an environmental theme, which makes is an ideal Earth Day story, it touches on many other themes as well. Among them are friendship, loss, sacrifice, commitment, a sense of community, and love. Tad and Taylor's parallel--and overlapping--stories give the reader many light-hearted moments to enjoy. And the wonderful illustrations add to the adventure.

This is an excellent book for boys, girls, parents, and teachers and offers many teachable moments. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Middle Grade Novel! May 10, 2012
Format:Hardcover
I LOVE this book! It's a fun, fast read with magic, enchantment, and substance. The two main characters (a girl and a toad) share the same impossible feat: to save the lake and the land they love. Moranville finds a perfect balance of humor and drama to create a meaningful, important book on many levels. The environmental message (save the toads!) and the empowerment message (no matter how small you are, you can do impossible things!), along with Moranville's beautiful language and Niki Daly's wonderful illustrations make this a very special, must-read book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bursting With Spring Sunshine March 31, 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Tad, a young toad waking up from hibernation, and a nature-loving girl named Taylor are the dual protagonists of this magical middle-grade tale. Tad's sleep was troubled by disturbing dreams, which prove to be prophetic when he discovers his home in Toadville-by-Tumbledown is in danger of destruction. Taylor has a similar problem because the wild area beside her beloved grandmother's home has been sold and will soon be bulldozed to make way for a strip mall. When they set out on separate journeys to save the land they love, their paths cross in unexpected ways.

Tad's and Taylor's stories are told with humor, suspense, and compassion that will bring readers to laughter and tears. The environmental theme is overarching, but friendship, family, and growing up are a few of the other concepts that emerge. And the lively black and white illustrations help bring the characters and action to life.

Read it with your children to spark a conversation about taking care of our planet or read it for fun. You can't go wrong either way.
