Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Gottfried, a beautiful Harvard Medical School graduate, board-certified gynecologist, and yoga teacher, looks like an advertisement for healthy living and convincingly pushes women to make lifestyle changes rather than immediately asking for conventional prescription drugs to treat problems such as depression. To make her points, she cites studies. Otherwise, she is careful to insert “in my opinion.” For example, she does not like the form of progesterone sold as Provera, because she believes it causes “terrible mood problems” and “removes sex drive in both men and women.” Occasionally, she words her sentences too casually: “Estrogen is actually a group of sex hormones responsible for keeping women juicy, joyous, and jonesin’ for sex.” Goodness. And some of her advice may seem too hard to live by. Still, most of her tips are solid and helpful: break a larger goal into smaller ones, eat like your great-grandparents, cut out white foods, and move more. A glossary of terms and several appendixes should help anyone who wants to understand hormones and the female body. A valuable title for any middle-aged woman. --Karen Springen

More About the Author

For the last twenty years, Harvard-educated physician, speaker and author of the forthcoming book, The Hormone Cure, Dr. Sara Gottfried has been dedicated to practicing and helping women feel at home in their bodies.

After graduating from the physician-scientist training program at Harvard Medical School and MIT, Dr. Gottfried completed her residency at the University of California at San Francisco, where she still serves on the faculty. She is board-certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology, a teacher of the adjunct faculty at Touro University College of Osteopathic Medicine, and a mentor to medical students in her integrative medicine practice, The Gottfried Center for Organic Gynecology.

Dr. Gottfried has a disruptive model of how to deliver cutting-edge women's health to as many women as possible by using technology - including teleseminars, group coaching, webinars, and Facebook - to raise oxytocin and reduce stress among today's overly busy women, while teaching them how to balance their hormones naturally, regardless of age and location. As a result, her innovative methods for sharing medical information make her a popular keynote speaker.

Also a nationally-recognized yoga instructor, Dr. Gottfried teaches workshops and online courses, such as her "Mission Ignition: Sex Drive" an online program she developed to help women cultivate their vitality. Dr. Gottfried also conducts mentoring and mastermind programs for practitioners to learn The Gottfried Protocol, her proprietary 3-Step Evidence-Based method for natural hormone balancing.

As an integrative gynecologist, Dr. Gottfried is a firm believer in treating the root cause of problems, not just the symptoms. She believes in leafy greens and nutrient-dense foods, together with evidence-based integration of botanicals and bioidentical hormones, rather than just prescribing medication. "My method is not one-size-fits-all. My mission is to help women feel sexy, vital and balanced from their cells to their soul," claims Dr. Gottfried adding, "I believe that managing and optimizing your health is your divine responsibility and path to personal power."

Dr. Sara Gottfried has been featured in publications such as Cosmopolitan, Glamour, Family Circle, Natural Health, Women's World, Redbook and Yoga Journal in addition to appearing in the award-winning film, "Yoga Woman" for her expertise. Her first book, The Hormone Cure: Reclaim Balance, Sleep, Sex Drive, and Vitality Naturally with The Gottfried Protocol (Scribner) will be on shelves March 12, 2013.

Dr. Gottfried lives in Berkeley, California with her husband and 2 daughters. Her husband, David Gottfried, is the founder of the US Green Building Council and LEED, and teaches people online how to green their lives. In her personal time, she enjoys learning how to reverse the epidemic of overwhelmed women with everything from "Tiara Time" to orgasm, lightly cooks kale (which her family refuses to eat), and biohacks her own neurohormonal dashboard. "I've had nearly every hormonal problem a woman can get - I've done the leg work and reviewed the studies exhaustively so you don't have to!" exclaims Dr. Gottfried.

Although long winded and repetitive, there is useful information in this book. However, the appendix has all the dosage info for supplements and is totally illegible on the kindle. Get the book.

Ok as we age, things change and yes I know that's normal - but sometimes it's hard to accept. After the birth of my 3rd kid, I could never really lose the "baby weight." I feel like I tried everything and got to the point where I was practically WANTING my thyroid to be abnormal so I could hopefully take a medicine and lose weight. Unfortunately - that's not really how it works. Even more unfortunately, when most of us go to our doctor's to complain about this sort of standstill (or worse - gaining weight), our Drs are sympathetic (After all they hear it all the time) but have no answers beyond the standard, "eat less, exercise more" advice.

Enter Dr. Sara Gottfried. In the hormone cure, she lays out the reasons why all these things we thought were just normal aging are really signs that our hormone levels are off-balance. And I don't mean menopause off-balance. I mean normal 30s, 40s not even peri-menopause off-balance. Dr Sara validates the fact that things can be off-balance in our body but that doesn't mean that our doctors will catch it, or actually even think to test it.

What this Harvard trained Gynecologist does is explain all the hormones at work in your body (cortisol, thyroid, testosterone, etc) and how you optimally need them to work together to feel your best. Honestly I'd heard of all of them but how no idea how they really worked in my body. She includes easy tests to take (if you don't want to pay lab fees) in her book or what tests to have ordered at labs if you want to be sure. Then she walks you through, step-by-step, what these results ACTUALLY mean. What a real normal is (not the dr's tables looking for REALLY abnormal) and if you are slightly off - how to correct it to feel your best.

Forget the confusing organization and the long winded passages and the "I'm your girlfriend who loves top 40 music" vibe the author is trying to cultivate.

What she really wants you to do is pay for more of her (poorly organized and grossly overpriced) programs. Join her detoxes, take online classes, pay for a monthly newsletter (it's all regurgitated info from the book anyways) and pay for access to old webinars and speeches. It's a lofty goal to help women improve their health and hormone balance is a genuine issue but this woman leaves me with a sour taste in my mouth. The website alone will set off alarms in any sane person's head - clearly this is someone who subscribes to the pyramid scheme marketing club.

Want to know what the book says? Stress less, eat healthy, get some vitamins and find an exercise regimen that works for you. And don't buy the freaking kindle or audio book. They're riddled with issues.

Not as medically scientific as I expected. There was nothing new or helpful - eliminate sugar, eliminate caffeine, fresh fruits and vegetables, etc.

It took me several weeks to read this book and that's unusual. I found the book quite easy to read and definitely entertaining, but I struggled with the sheer amount of information. I wanted to get it all straight in my head but I don't think it's really that kind of book. The Hormone Cure is a book you need to put on the shelf and refer to often.

Just in case anyone needs a few hormonal truth bombs - PMS, infertility, PCOS, problem menopausal symptoms and unpredictable periods are not normal. Yes, those things seem to be common, some almost expected, but they are not normal. Sara Gottfried found herself having some problems and decided to set about working out how to fix her own health and hormone issues and has gone on to make a career of helping other women.

Gottfried starts out by giving some background to her life and health, and how she came to do the work she does and to writing this book. Chapter 1 contains a series of questionnaires which you can use to decide if you suffer from a hormonal imbalance... or two. This is not a quick magazine style questionnaire, it is quite detailed and time consuming, but it is just the beginning. The next step is to work out which hormone issues you may have and which chapter/s of the book apply to you.

Chapters 2 and 3 are a detailed run-down on all things hormonal: what happens when and why and which hormones are responsible.

Part II mostly concentrates on the various hormonal problems and various ways to resolve them. This section seemed very, very detailed to me, and that's probably because I wanted to read it all, so as not to miss anything.

I've been dealing with perimenopausal symptoms for about a year, ever since I turned 41. I just haven't felt like myself -- and have felt run down, exhausted, and completely low energy. My blood work has been coming back fine, so in my online searching for more information about perimenopause, I came across an article by Dr. Sara Gottfried that led me to this book. As soon as I read the introductory anecdote about a woman who had the same symptoms I was having, I knew that this book would really help -- and it has so far!

As other reviewers have mentioned, the book opens with a detailed questionnaire that helps you identify what hormonal issues are ailing you. From there, the book includes chapters on all of the various hormonal issues. Each chapter starts with a thorough explanation of the science behind the hormone being discussed, which Dr. Gottfried backs up with a detailed bibliography of articles from peer-reviewed scientific journals.

Each chapter also outlines the suggested protocols, which are given to you in stages. The idea is to start at Stage 1, which usually focuses on lifestyle adjustments and the use of vitamins/herbs, before kicking things into Stage 2 or 3 if the Stage 1 changes aren't working.

What I especially appreciate is how Dr. Gottfried takes a holistic approach to looking at a woman's entire lifestyle and way of coping with stress, instead of just prescribing medication.

At the end of the book there are several Appendixes that are very valuable.
