Editorial Reviews

Gulley Jimson is broke, difficult, conniving, uncouth, and a welcher - but an artist. The visions in his head may not really satisfy him when realized, but the quest continues, for the perfect wall. The Beeders leave for six weeks of vacation and return to find a 7000 pound committment and the wall of their living room a national treasure, even though living with a wall mural of feet is not their cup of tea. Then - in a bombed out church scheduled for demolition - the wall that can become his vision.

A different creature than the book. Guinness 's script was nominated for an academy award. It runs more like a play and would have made a nice one. The paintings by John Bratby are wonderful. When I was small my grandfather took me to see this and I was very happy with the tiger face. It is great to see it again so many years later and still love it. Filled with artist wisdom that will go over the heads of non artists such as...not a woman in a tub but.."the tub of tubs and the woman of women" and of course "this was not what I meant" and "ah that is where it went wrong". Everyone is stellar. Gaugh as the sculptor and Guinness as the painter locked into fulfilling their visions despite the awkwardness of life around them is beautifully sketched when they share that need for understanding and approval but of course can't figure out each others work and have a row relieving the situation. Very inspiring, delightful and funny comment on creative genius. Recommend to any artist & especially collectors who like the work but can't abide artists. A stand alone.

This and the criterion version are both 50's grainy TV style. Mostly in light gray for outdoor shots but the color is memorable & stands out in the paintings & paint pots. This was probably the intention. This one seems a hair clearer than criterions' but not enough to be significant. Where it doesn't run smooth I suppose they cut for laughs. I wish they had out takes & alternate scenes back then. It is so good I wish for more.
