Editorial Reviews

Floradora girl Peggy Martin has found a life she could only dream about. She's in love - real love - with a handsome man about town (Gene Raymond) who adores her. They marry and upon returning from a honeymoon cruise, Peggy finds he's purchased a breathtaking mansion in the nicest part of town. But times and fortunes will change, both for Peggy and her beloved 56th Street home. Kay Francis, queen of triple-hankie weepies, portrays Peggy in a brisk, decades-spanning melodrama that links the big turns of her life to the fading glory of her home. Break out the tissues when Peggy sacrifices her happiness for that of a young woman (Margaret Lindsay) in debt to gamblers - a woman who will never know Peggy is her supposedly long-dead mother.

This 1933 black and white five hanky tearjerker is what passed for a chick flick in the early nineteen thirties. With Kay Francis, who was a big Warner Brother star back then, showcasing gorgeous gowns, and with two handsome leading men, Gene Raymond and Ricardo Cortez, the film was bound to do well at the box office at the time.

The story is filled with love and pathos. Peggy Martin (Kay Francis) is a stunning floradora girl circa early nineteen hundreds. She is sought after by rich, handsome, and influential men. She settles on one and to her own amazement, he decides to marry her, against the wishes of his mother, and make her the happiest woman on earth, which he does. He builds a mansion of East 56th Street in Manhattan in New York just for her. They proceed to have a lovely daughter together, her mother-in-law comes around, and she is living a life of which not even Cinderella could have dreamed.

Then in a flash, all is gone in a heap of ashes, when Peggy makes, what turns out to be, a disastrous decision with ramifications beyond her wildest imagination. Her life flashes before the viewer in decades, when Peggy finds herself once more at a crossroad and with an opportunity to help a young woman (Margaret Lindsay) with whom she has a special secret bond.

Can't get enough of Kay Francis. She was so talented. I wish I could find every one of her movies. I would buy them all.

Loved the movie. Could watch it numerous times and not be bored. What a story and all told in an hour or so with period clothing, music, vehicles. What is there not to like? Kay Francis is a beautiful woman, glamorously gowned and does not over act, just so likable and down to earth. Gene Raymond and Ricardo Cortez are also good.
