Wonderful, touching story of real people, January 15, 2012
This review is from: The House on Prospect (Kindle Edition)
The House on Prospect is a beautifully written story about the complicated relationship between three generations of women. It will touch you, make you laugh, and make you cry. Bernadette Walsh's subtle use of language, traditions, and manners painted an authentic portrait of an Irish Catholic family. I loved it.

The House On Prospect is one amazing story. I started reading it in the evening and finished it in one sitting. It is a story dealing with life its self, a story of greed, family secrets, abuse, infidelity and happiness with a touch of romance. A story of 4 generations of a family that dealt with all of the above and kept it hidden.
When Rose is diagnosed with cancer and just has a few months at the most to live, her daughter Ellen returns home. Ellen spent her childhood living in the house on Prospect, a house by the sea, a yard full of flowers and a house full of secrets. Raised more by her grandmother then her mother, she never knew who her father was. As Ellen and other family members take turns staying with her at the hospital, squabbles erupt, memories return of things past and Ellen feels as her mother is a stranger to her. As she goes through old letters and photographs her mother and grandmother has kept she finds a picture and eventually learns the truth on a few things. Rose who was studying to become a nun had to return home. When she became pregnant with Ellen she never told the father. Now Ellen wonders did she want me or was I a hindrance? Will the truth eventually be revealed to all or will it forever remain a secret and taken to the grave with Rose.
This was an amazing story; there is the occasional coarse language in the book but not enough to detract from the story. The characters were very well presented and each played a part in the plot. Reading this really made me feel like I was watching a soap opera. It is a very good book that one could see happening in any family today's society. I feel like his would make a good movie made for TV.
