5.0 out of 5 stars The House on the Mound, June 28, 2009

This is a great book which combines true facts from history with fiction!

This is a great book which Mr. Derleth combines historical facts with fiction. I purchased to have my 15 year old granddaughter read prior to
our visiting the Villa Louis this month.

3.0 out of 5 stars good historical fiction, May 18, 2008

This review is from: The House on the Mound (Paperback)
I grew up in Wisconsin and have visited the real "House on the Mound". The House on the Mound that is there now is not the one described in and which is the center of this book, but was built by Hercules Dousman's son years later.

"The House on the Mound" is historical fiction with Hercules Dousman, Wisconsin's first millionaire, at the center of the story. The book is very good at depicting the life and politics of pre-Civil War Wisconsin. Dousman himself is drawn well in this book as he deals with his myriad of business interests but also with some dark personal secrets. I'll be honest---I did not expect the book to be as good as it was. August Derleth is a very good writer and if you like historical fiction you might like this book. And if you're a Wisconsin history buff (there must be some) then this book is required reading.
