I purchased this book to read to my daughter (6 months) and her cousins (3-11 years). The pictures are stunning--you will have a hard time believing that EVERYTHING in the pictures was created by the artist author. Smaller children will like the whimsical story and adorable characters. Older children will have a blast identifying the everyday objects that have been magically transformed into mouse possessions.

A great, great book that you and your children will read over and over and over again!

"The House that Mouse Built" is my new favorite children's book. The intricate and imaginative worlds that artist Maggie Rudy creates are so detailed that every time I look at one of the beautiful photographs I see something new. The text is so fun and lyrical that it can be read over and over. This book would also be a very sweet gift to a couple expecting their first child. Bravo for Mouse and Musetta!

When my children were young they loved books about mice. Kids know that mice are miniatures, and so the illustrations needed to have detail worth studying. They also loved stories with interesting sly twists, so that things didn't end predictably. Extra points for a good yarn and subplots, if tightly bound to the main story, were good too. Rhymes that worked without straining were a bonus.

The story, told concisely and satisfyingly in rhyme, is one that children can relate to: Mouse has built a house and a second mouse, Musetta, takes his piece of cheese. This act provokes a chain of events that's exactly right for small children: a bumblebee stings the wrongdoer, who is appropriately upset, and Woolly Bear caterpillar helps out. There is a final plot twist that is just right for adults and kids alike.

The illustrations are photographs of the insects and mice in interiors, fabulously detailed vignettes, and rural settings in which Mouse, Musetta, and the pair of fuzzy insects have their adventure and even include, eventually, a judge's chambers. The faces of the mice and the body language seem terrifically "real" but of course are more than "real" (mice register suprise and delight in this story)-- and appeal powerfully to imagination. All of this is crafted incomprehensibly cleverly and well by illustrator Maggie Rudy. Children as young as three will love to spot buttons, corks, tea balls,a coin, matchbooks, bottle caps, and even a big old shoe repurposed for mouse fittings, furniture, and the stuff that is strewn about in the country. All ages will be wowed by the realism of the pictures. Each day is brightly sunny and that works well, too; the mood is just right.

This remarkable book succeeds on so many levels.

This is a delightful book with awesome detail (that you can stare at for hours!) The story is sweet and simple, and flipping through the pages is like wandering into a magical little world and into the lives of these tiny little characters with huge personality. I'm a grown -up (so to speak) but reading this book is like a nice little escape for me...I wish I knew more kids to give this book as a gift!

Author Maggie Rudy is an artist and blogger who creates delightful scenes with little mice people and shares them with her readers. She expertly takes simple household objects and transforms them into something new, granting them a second life in her diminutive and magical mouse world.

The story in The House that Mouse Built is based around Mousetta, who meets her future husband in a humorous way, and after some minor scares, is able to expand her life in wonderful ways! It is inspired by the "House that Jack Built" rhyme, which brings a similarly catchy cadence to her heartwarming tale and is a joy to read or hear, no matter your age.

Further, The House that Mouse Built is a perfectly beautiful picture book, with gorgeous photos filled with miniature, whimsical delights. My children adored finding all kinds of tiny surprises in the intricate scenes, like the wall clock made from an antique watch face or the front porch step created out of a decorative mints container.

The House that Mouse Built was a pleasure to discover and I'd love to see additional books that show more of her charming mouse creations situated in a story setting.

The House that Mouse Built is a sweet journey into a world that is intricate and full of visual surprises. The illustrations are so finely crafted and full of detail that the reader, whether child or adult will want to slow down and peer into the pages. The simple text compliments the rich images, which really tell the story. I'm enchanted by the expressive figures of the little mice. Maggie Rudy has somehow breathed life into them. Their gestures and the very glances from their little glass eyes seem full of emotion. I'm looking forward to reading it to my grandson and recommend it to anyone who is looking for a special children's book and / or who appreciates fine illustration.
