I found my great grandmother's copy of The Household Searchlight Recipe book when going through some old boxes of books from storage. What a real treasure! It's great fun to just read, some of the recipes are very unusual, but it is a timeless resource for today's cooking as well. The recipes were formulated by the Household Searchlight team and contributed by homemakers that were readers of The Household Magazine in 1931. I may never be brave enough to make Dutch Lunch sandwiches (onion dipped in french dressing on buttered rye, topped with sauerkraut and dusted with paprika) or Creamed Brains, but there are plenty of tried and true basics here and lots of great ideas for more recipes. This one is a Keeper!

My mother used a much more beat-up copy of this cookbook. You can bake, boil and stew your way back through memory lane with some of these recipes. I don't think any of them will win culinary awards, but for baby-boomers it's likely to make you nostalgic. ;-)

This is a basic vintage/classic cookbook. The introductory pages include some no-frills basic information about cooking methods, temperatures, measurements, etc. This information is covered in a very concise manner, taking up only five pages. Twenty-four tabbed recipe chapters follow, each with its own table of contents on the first page. These chapters include appetizers, beverages, breads, cakes, candies, canning & preserving, cereals, cheese, cookies, eggs, fish & wild game, frozen desserts, fruits, gelatin, icings & fillings, meats, pastries, poultry, puddings, salads & dressings, sandwiches, sauces, soups, and vegetables. Unlike many old cookbooks, the recipes DO include oven temperatures. They are composed of basic ingredients and many will, by nature, be more time-consuming to prepare than those in most modern cookbooks. Not all ingredients are healthy (sugar, shortening, etc.).

If you're interested in a very basic cookbook with an easy-to-reference format, or in vintage homemaking books, this is a nice one. If you're looking for a comprehensive recipe book, a book of "quick and easy" recipes, or whole/health food, I recommend finding something else.

So pleased to see this. When I was eight years old my mother handed this to me and informed me that I would be cooking for my dad in 30 days as she was going to the hospital and would be there at least 30 days. I did learn and cooked for two months. (Poor dad)
I learned to cook from this book and now have it in my business in NC. I still use the pie recipes and puddings. I drag out the old book to show customers who are interested along with my first mini pie pan. I have been offered $400 for it but it does not get sold. The cover is loose and some of the pages are frail but this is where I learned to measure, substitute and learned the cooking terms 63 years ago. I haven't decided who will get it when I need it no longer. The pie lady.

This is my grandmother's cookbook. Now mine. She made the most wonderful cinnamon rolls. She used the recipe in this book and taught me how to make them. They are large and she would drizzle a thin stream of chocolate over them. Folks came from all over the country to taste these oh so good cinnamon rolls. Her copy is well worn with use. I also have my aunts copy and a couple of other originals of this wonderful cookbook, If you are a collector, then you need this book.

I have the first 10 Household Searchlight recipe books ever printed. 1931 was the first year this wonderful book was printed but you have yours listed as a 1931 version. they changed the cover to the one you have sometime after the 1940 one.
you need to re-list this issue of yours as a "copyright 1931,1937"etc. and list the correct date of issue which would normally be found on the inside cover page.(provided it's still in tact). perhaps you werent aware of these facts but they are easily researched.(Google,Ask etc.)
Hope this info helps, sincerely, Avid Searchlight collector, T. Verstuyft

My Grandmother fed 8 hungry farm kids using this cookbook. The recipes are simple and straightforward - some are even a little weird (Prune Ice Cream?). But it's still my go-to book when I want to make something just like she did.
