Editorial Reviews

Review

"What a special gift this book is, not only for the general public, but also for those like me who teach, and those who have come to learn in medical school. Laurence Savett shares the process of practicing humanistic medicine by explaining how to stand in the patients' shoes and look through their eyes, while actively listening to their stories. This highly readable, useful book is a treasure."-Susan Resnik, DrPH Facilitator, Doctor/Patient Communication Segment, University of California, San Diego, School of Medicine Author of Blood Saga: Hemophilia, AIDS, and the Survival of a Community

I was very interested in this book, it was a wonderful window into Dr. Savett's life as well as the life of a physician in general. As an undergraduate student, I one day hope to use Dr. Savett's lessons in what will hopefully be my medical career. Until I reach that point, I intend on re-reading this book several times and using the knowledge I gain from it in everyday life, as most of Dr. Savett's core arguments can be applied to any situation.

Dr. Savett gives upcoming and present health care professionals his ideas on how important the human side of medicine is. This is a great book for those who might be nervous to be dealing with patients and gives them numerous examples that Dr. Savett himself dealt with. Very fast and easy read.
