On the heels of their critically acclaimed EP, This Desert, Brooklyn's The Hundred in the Hands will release their debut full-length September 21 on Warp Records. Time Out New York says "The Hundred in the Handsâ TM music springs from that sliver of the early '80s in which pop was personal, arty and potentially angry," while Brooklyn Vegan calls their EP "a bit post-punky, a bit shoegaze-y but sounds like now. And you can dance to it." The new recording follows the bandâ TMs first national tour and a wave of critical praise from the U.K. and Europe. The Hundred in the Hands is an album of deceptively complex pop songs which hark back to the dance music of NYC's storied underground. Where their recent EP feels like a summertime pop dream, THITH's album conjures the spirit of downtown's mutant disco scene as made legendary by clubs like the Paradise Garage.
Great. Dancey, smart, elegant. Reminds me of Nico and the Velvet Undeground, but with trained voices. Voice used as a percussive pop in lieu of drum, for rhythm. Listen to it on a good stereo in a big room because production values are very good. Songs are music first, then a story line emerges after several listenings. Also read the lyrics. Buy it. You will love it.
Excellent debut album - has some very catchy tunes that could make the pop charts. My favorite is Commotion - starts out fast and Everdell's evocative buildup is bound to have your head shaking before she reaches the chorus - the song felt familiar the first time I heard it. Pigeons has the line you can't get out your head - Saturday comes, Sunday comes, we go ... Dressed in Dresden rounds out my top 3. The first three tracks Young, Lovesick and Killing are very good as is Last City - there's not one misstep on this album. Everdell has a great voice at times reminding me of Dido. They put on a great set at the album release show at Brooklyn's Coco 66 - Jason Friedman's hard-driving guitar was particularly enjoyable.
Saw these guys open for Delphic and The Temper Trap. Literally one guy with a drum machine, guitar and keyboard with a female front man. I was a little leery when they started, not knowing much about them before hand. Seemed a bit, "threw everything from the garage into the van and drove to the show." for me. They rocked it out though. had the whole room moving. By the end of their set, I was very impressed. the album gives them a much more refined sound. And once you hear "pigeon" the lyric will never get out of your head. In a good way....
