The Hundred Year Marathon is a book that will make you rethink everything you thought you knew about the relationship between China and the US. Even if you don’t think this is something that will affect you, I can promise you this book will change your mind.

The insights Michael Pillsbury provides on China- US relations will give you chills. The information is well sourced, presented in a way that shows the bold truth on this subject matter. It’s broken down in easy to understand terms, making it a good read for anyone who wants to learn more on the subject.

While there may be other books about Chinese and US relations, I don’t believe that any can compete with Pillsbury’s knowledge and decades of experience. His background and particularly his position as Special Assistant for Asian Affairs in the Office of the Secretary of Defense gave him an awareness that most of us just aren’t privy to.

Interested in delving further into this subject, I had a look at some of the source files provided on (...)

The evidence is right there in the articles, and I found it to be an interesting follow up. If you have any skepticism, you can also find the Author’s credentials there too. I admit I checked out the website before deciding to buy, and I couldn’t be happier that I did. I think this a book every American should read.

This book is a refreshing read among the vast quantity of China books about China's rise. Simply put, there cannot be two emperors. A multi-polar world is inconsistent with the Chinese hierarchal worldview, and it's view of China's role throughout history. While the critics will call the author a right wing hawk, the book is well cited by both literature and personal experience. This book does not amount to fear-mongering. Instead it simply shows how China's words and actions are inconsistent, but consistent with China's own world view and strategic thinking. While China is by no means an immediate threat, it is a long term competitor and Washington needs to see the writing on the wall. The author wasn't just an observer of China's rise but an active participant in the US government supporting China since the Nixon administration. His career record speaks for itself in why this book should be on every China observer's shelf (or Kindle). Additionally, this book should be read by business leaders as well as academics, considering China's rise is largely economic. It's SOEs that do business with the West are part of their grand strategy.

I first encountered Dr. Pillsbury a few years back when he and another scholar were interviewed on PBS Newshour a few years back ((https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7lZJGBtyqyw") here, really great discussion). I saw a review this week on The Weekly Standard, went to the book's website, which features a nice overview and timeline, and grabbed a digital copy (http://www.100yearmarathon.com).

Pillsbury is spot on with his analysis of the last century of U.S.-China relations. Pillsbury clearly dug into the annals of history and the depths of government bureaucracy to uncover heaps of evidence. That evidence shows not just hundreds of ignored signs of impending problems, but cover-ups and systematic denial.

The best part is that Pillsbury doesn't write the book like a long college essay. It's approachable, interesting, and even fun. Highly recommend!!

Author Pillsbury is fluent in Mandarin and has been involved in U.S.-China government issues over a forty-year timespan. One of his central themes is that hawks in China have successfully persuaded that nation's leadership to view the U.S. as dangerous, and entity that it must replace. (Seems like the U.S. has the same view of China, as witnessed by our recent 'China pivot.') In fact, two Chinese colonels have written a book recommending that China use 'asymmetrical warfare, including terrorism, to attack the U.S.' That book also referenced 'the Hundred-Year Marathon.'

Obviously that would not be good for either China or the U.S. Thus, Pillsbury contends that we must rid ourselves of false assumptions about China. The biggest is that 'engagement' (eg. trade, cultural exchanges) would induce Beijing to both cooperate with the West on a wide range of policy problems, and to move down the road to democracy. Neither has proven true. A second - that China no longer embraces mercantilism; reality is that it maintains a system of high tariffs, maintains direct control of natural resources, and protects domestic manufacturing - all the while building up its monetary reserves.

Pillsbury also insists that Americans realize that China has a strong interest in avenging a century of humiliation by the West - beginning with the Opium Wars. Reality is that China plans to supplant the West as the next global economic, military, and political power, and to accomplish that by 2049, 100 years after the CCP takeover of China. Further, this will be accomplished through stealth. ('Induce complacency to avoid alerting your opponent, manipulate your opponent's advisers, be patient - for decades or longer, to achieve victory, steal your opponent's ideas and technology for strategic purposes.
