Review

“This book is clearly indicated for clinicians of all types: psychiatrists, psychologists and other psychotherapists, primary care physicians, nurse clinicians, and physician assistants. It is remarkable how many clinical problems may respond to hypnosis. Also, anyone suffering from overeating, smoking, pain, or rarer conditions would also benefit. Dr. Lewis has written an essential healthcare resource. There is nothing to fear with hypnosis and so much to gain.”  —Daniel E. Bendor, MD, assistant clinical professor, psychiatry department, Yale University School of Medicine

“A valuable resource that will enable doctors to improve their care for many different types of patients, especially those for whom traditional Western medicine has few helpful options.”  —Myles Spar, MD, MPH, medical director, Akasha Center for Integrative Medicine

“Beneficial not only for laypeople but also for clinicians who deal with these common health issues daily with their patients.”  —Nita Rastogi, MD, FACP, president, Family Internal Medicine, and assistant professor, Hershey Medical Center

More About the Author

Scott Lewis, DC, is a licensed chiropractor and clinical hypnotherapist who has devoted over twenty-five years to educating and helping others through the use of hypnosis. He is the author of two books, The Hypnosis Treatment Option (January 2013) and The Fitness Groove.

He is a recognized authority on the use of hypnosis for weight loss, smoking cessation, and motivation. He speaks to thousands of people each year at events and seminars in the United States and internationally. He also works as a corporate consultant, using his shows and presentations to demonstrate the powerful effects hypnosis has on confidence, relaxation, and creativity.

Dr. Lewis first realized the power of hypnosis to help people achieve their health and wellness goals over twenty years ago, when he used self-hypnosis techniques to help himself lose over 40 pounds. Inspired by his results, he trained extensively in clinical hypnosis so he could offer more health options to his chiropractic patients.

Today, an estimated 400,000 (and counting!) of his audio programs have been sold throughout the world, many of them to major corporations and fitness organizations interested in using hypnosis and self-hypnosis techniques to help employees stop smoking, lose weight, reduce stress, and achieve better health.

In addition to practicing and lecturing on the medical and motivational uses of hypnosis, Dr. Lewis is an accomplished performer, having headlined in his own hypnosis show at the Riviera Hotel in Las Vegas for over nine years. He has performed globally and has opened for music superstars such as Night Ranger, Smash Mouth, Pablo Cruise, the Village People, Manhattan Transfer, and many others. As a nationally recognized hypnosis expert, he has appeared on numerous television and radio programs and networks throughout the world, including Extra, Inside Edition, Fox News, The View, E!, and the O'Reilly Factor.

I was very impressed with the quality of the many reviews written for Dr. Lewis's "Hypnosis Treatment Option" book. At age 75, as one who has had chronic pain since I was in my early twenties, I still constantly seek a better solution for pain than provided by drugs. Now this is an interesting comment to make, as I was just honored by the CA Board of Pharmacy for 50 years of practice in California. I am certainly not anti-pharmaceutical treatment for many conditions. Yet, pain has been a difficult diagnosis for drugs. The medical profession is a little afraid to prescribe, the pharmacists are often afraid to fill the prescriptions and the patient is often labeled as a "user."

This is the first decade that I have become comfortable with alternate therapies that provide real help. Among those are, diet control, therapeutic massage and self-hypnosis. I have been following Dr. Lewis for several years and enjoyed his previous recorded sessions for weight control and smoking cessation. I have actually had several sessions with a licensed therapist in self-hypnosis and saw that there was real value to this treatment option. However, in the full picture, my mind resisted as I never got over the "scam" or "placebo" effect of hypnosis. As Dr. Lewis presents real proven evidence in the written word, I feel I have intellectually been made to understand and I am excited to resume my experience with this powerful tool.

Thank you, Dr. Lewis for making your book available in the most economical form possible. Now there is every reason to try hypnosis and your "old-time neighborhood druggist" gives you his full endorsement.

I've read other books on Hypnosis and, while the patient stories can be interesting, they often lack substantive clinical citation. As such, I've always wondered about the science behind Hypnosis. In this book, Dr. Lewis does an excellent job of balancing interesting patient stories with verifiable references to clinical studies that back up his thesis that Hypnosis can be an effective tool for the treatment of a wide variety of mental and physical disorders. Dr. Lewis has a fluid and efficient writing style and this book answered many questions about Hypnosis, giving me further avenues of study.

There is much more than meets the eye when it comes to hypnosis and Dr. Lewis has done a fabulous job of explaining all of the benefits and applications hypnosis can be used for. It is refreshing to see a member of the medical community advocating such a dynamic and well-versed treatment option. Dr. Lewis shows how versatile and effective hypnosis can be in terms of treating a myriad of symptoms. The book is a well-written eye-opening journey that should be required reading for all in the medical community. Dr. Lewis shows how effective hypnosis can be as an alternative and complementary treatment option. As a Clinical Hypnotherapist with a masters degree in Psychology, I appreciate Dr. Lewis's candid approach.

This book is a valuable addition to my bookshelf and should be read by anyone interested in or practicing hypnosis.

I like the fact that the author is not a recent hypnosis graduate nor someone who has gathered thoughts from other hypnotists and put them in book form. Instead, Dr. Scott is a chiropractor with more than 25 years of experience using hypnosis for himself and to help his clients.

The book's title, "The Hypnosis Treatment Option: Proven Solutions for Pain, Insomnia, Stress, Obesity, and Other Common Health Problems", states the author's intention. On this, he clearly delivers, providing his own personal experiences working with clients and references to highly regarded medical and professional journals. Under the collective term "other common health problems", the author covers smoking, fear of public speaking, fear of flying, bedwetting, labor pain, fibromyalgia, teeth grinding, pre- and postsurgical hypnosis, irritable bowel syndrome and many other issues where hypnosis has proven to be effective.

I believe the following audiences will benefit from reading this book:

* Those who are wondering what hypnosis is or is not and how it can be used. Part I (Chapters 1 - 5) covers: What is hypnosis (the process, how you would feel, how it works), myths and misconceptions, its history (including its use as an anesthesia), finding a good hypnotist and self-hypnosis.
* Those who are practicing hypnotherapists or consulting hypnotists. From my experience, there are many well-intentioned hypnotists, who are narrowly trained. That is they are well-trained in what hypnosis is and is not, and how to assist a client to access a relaxed state.
