Book Description

September 27, 2006 078174802X 978-0781748025 Third, North American Edition

This best-selling resource provides a general overview and basic information for all adult intensive care units. The material is presented in a brief and quick-access format which allows for topic and exam review. It provides enough detailed and specific information to address most all questions and problems that arise in the ICU. Emphasis on fundamental principles in the text should prove useful for patient care outside the ICU as well.

New chapters in this edition include hyperthermia and hypothermia syndromes; infection control in the ICU; and severe airflow obstruction. Sections have been reorganized and consolidated when appropriate to reinforce concepts.

Editorial Reviews

Review

University of Minnesota Medical School, 28-JAN-07 -- This is the third edition of an immensely popular overview of critical care practice. Practitioners at all levels will benefit from this work. This edition is another outstanding presentation of applied physiology for the clinician of any discipline practicing critical care. Production quality has been significantly enhanced with improved artwork and paper stock. I believe this edition will be as popular as its predecessors have been.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great ICU core book July 22, 2011
By O. Awad
Format:Paperback
It took me 3 years of fellowship and 4 years in private practice to eventually sit down and read the book. I tried to read it in fellowship for the critical care exams but I didn't feel it was a passing material. I still don't think this is a board study material. It is however the best core book in the critical care practice that I found. It has the basic everyday mundane tasks of the ICU. Do you need to replace Calcium IV. It has the dose. Do you want to find an algorithm to trouble shoot an alarm. It has it. It is not a lecture preparation book. But It is a must read and must have in each and every ICU. I'll keep mine at an arms reach for those basic things that I might one day forget.

3.0 out of 5 stars Why?! March 24, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is a great book (I have the paperback version) but it is the second Kindle medical book I've purchased that does not have a Table of Contents. WTH?! Why go through all the trouble to create a book for the Kindle - or any other tablet for that matter - and blow off the TOC? It's infuriating.

1.0 out of 5 stars Great in hardcover, not so much in Kindle version May 22, 2012
By J.B.
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The content of this book is a must have for anyone rotating through an ICU. As a strong proponent of e-books, I purchased the kindle version. Unfortunately a 1500 page book with no workable electronic table of contents makes this a tough book to navigate! Go with the paperback version for about the same price!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book! March 19, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I'm an ICU nurse, and bought the kindle version of this to expand my knowledge of the Critical Care Patieint. If find it easy to read, and very informative. It is presented in a very clear, and wasy to understand matter. As with any medical book, some of the information is dated, even though this is a new addtion, but over all is very accurate. I would highly recomend it to other ICU nurses, or MD's first experiencing the ICU.
Some of the tables are a bit more challenging to view on the Kindle format, but I find normally just rotating my screen helps with this.

5.0 out of 5 stars great book November 25, 2012

great for quick reference. However, uptodate is readily available and I catch myself using online resources more frequently. Never had a chance to read it cover to cover.

5.0 out of 5 stars The book that makes one street smart in the ICU July 18, 2010
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I read this book prior to starting my sub-I in the MICU. This is a one-of-a-kind book that combines basic physiology behind clinical decision making with the day-to-day practices at the bedside. The chapters are concise and to the point, making the book an easy read for all of us with little time (and patience). I kept it in the workroom and referred to it every day, and I know that I will be using it soon for my ICU months as a resident. Read it, use it, and benefit. I wish there is an equivalent book for the floor.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very useful
Great for first expostition to ICU problems. The information is not complete, though. The basics are there, but you'll need to search for your information elsewhere.
