Book Description

[Note: this new edition contains a brand new foreword written by the author, addressing previous reader concerns]

The crew of the Icarus is used to high-stress situations: their ship is designed to dive into the heart of a star to collect scientific data for research. But when they discover an alien artifact hovering in low orbit of the Sun, the attempt to retrieve it pushes them to the breaking point. Captain Gordon Markov is more than happy to oversee his final mission on board Icarus. And Doctor Stephen Straub is more than happy to be a part of the prestigious research team assigned to the ship. Testing out the Icarus's new heatshielding is the plan, but the artifact in orbit of the Sun leads Doctor Catherine Tybalt, head of the research team, to press the captain to retrieve the object for further analysis. The interior of the artifact is hollow -- a void -- and should be incinerated, but it's perfectly intact. If they can discover what makes the object naturally resilient to the radiation of the Sun, perhaps it can be used for future development in stardiving. With a risky plan in place, Captain Markov reluctantly agrees. However, the artifact emits a strange radiation that affects not just the operational systems of the ship, but also the crew itself. Once the artifact is on board, research begins, and the scientists discover the terrifying secret of the void...but when they do, the fate of the ship may have already been sealed.

The Icarus Void is an intense novel of science-fiction horror that will drag you in and pull you along until the final page. It also serves as the terrifying prelude to CK Burch's upcoming Equinox Saga

Review

"Honestly, it is rarely that proper, grown-up Sci-Fi this good comes along and if you only read one Science-Fiction novel this year, really it needs to be this one!" (five stars out of five) - The TBR Pile (thetbrpile.weebly.com/1/post/2012/03/review-and-contest-the-icarus-void-by-ck-burch.html)

"Despite an overcrowded cast, the competent dialogue and well-developed characters enhance this decent contribution to the genre." - Kirkus Reviews (kirkusreviews.com/book-reviews/ck-burch/the-icarus-void/)

"The tale is filled with twists and turns that keep this reader eagerly turning pages. Burch masterfully builds the tension to a stunning ending." (five stars out five) - Readers Favorite Book Reviews (readersfavorite.com/review/5753)

"If you like Event Horizon, The Abyss, Aliens and movies/stories of that ilk you will like this. I found the plot was fantastic and the story really kept my attention - I couldn't put it down." (four stars out of five) - P.E. Hayden, Amazon.co.uk (amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B006KYX1XS)

About the Author

CK Burch is a novelist, poet, father of two, and assistant editor for ZED Presents...Publishing. Born in 1982 and floating somewhere between adulthood and immaturity, he writes horror fiction and love letters, balancing out a strange line that, perhaps, only a Libra or a child of the 80's could appreciate. When not writing or composing, he's spending time with his little rugrats, who also walk a fine line between adorable and deportable. They take after their father. When he's not trying desperately to write in a few more chapters and ignore those lovable children who serve to remind him not to cuss so much, he's playing video games with the volume up real loud. It drowns out the sound of neighbors yelling at him to turn it down.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not for Prudes February 13, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
A good storyline with many twists and turns right up 'til the end. Even the last paragraph was a shocker. My only caveats are what I consider an extreme amount of profanity, and one overdone section where one character emptys his bowels to use his feces as a "weapon". I did four years int the Navy and 35 years in blue collar industry and I don't know anyone who talks like that. Still I did enjoy the book, and the price can't be beat.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lost In Space............. March 29, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Icarus Void is quite simply the best Sci-fi novel I have read all year and one of my favourites of all time. It is right up there with the sci-fi of Iain.M.Banks and is an unputdownable read that will leave you literally screaming for more! The climax is fantastic but what is even more fantastic is the journey there. There is so much tension here, you cut it with a light sabre!

As for the language.....if you were on a starship potentially about to fall into the sun whilst everyone around you was starting to behave and react irrationally then I think you might start using profanity too!

This book is gritty, believable and very, very scary! Absolutely awesome and if I could give it more than 5 stars out of five, I would!!!

I loved this book! Tons of action and suspense, and kept you guessing about the characters -- you're never really sure who is being affected and who isn't. The story was a little slower in the beginning, but I had no problem with that. There was plenty of build up and interesting detail to reel you in, but it wasn't so slow that it was boring. As it picks up, it keeps going making it hard to put down right through to the end. And what an ending!! I was like what??? I want to know more!!!!
As for the profanity, I don't really care. It was mostly in part due to the personality of the character "Mac". I've known a few people who swear like that, and I've seen worse in the movies and on TV. In describing the character's pain or fear, if the author had used word's like poppycock or horse feathers, I don't know that I would have made it through the story.

I also went to the author's blog after I finished, and one of his goals was to make the reader feel like they wanted to go back to the beginning and read it again. I laughed, because that's exactly how I felt! I won't be reading it again right away, because I have so many books, but I do intend to some time.

I'm hoping the author plans to continue this story, or a write new Sci-Fi adventure. Either way, all I can say is: More please!!
