Editorial Reviews

Review

'intricate and beautiful' TES Selected in Top Ten Bear Picture Books: 'Jackie Morris is one of my favourite children's illustrators and storytellers, and The Ice Bear is one of her most beautiful stories. It has the timeless feel of all the best myths about it - the poetic, mystical story of the stolen polar bear cub who has to choose between his two families is wonderful in itself, but when combined with Jackie's detailed and exquisite paintings, it's a book to treasure forever.' More About the Author

Jackie Morris is an author, illustrator and artist. She lives and works in a small cottage by the sea in Wales, UK. She loves colour, cats, birds and flight, walking, reading, magic and dragons, kites, dandelion clocks, dogs and horses ( especially the black and white heavy footed kind with great liquid eyes) and many other things.
Above the house where she lives is a rare thing, a dark sky where stars are clear and visible, and every night she walks, watching the moon wax and wain and the stars turn across the ocean of air.
If she could have one special thing it would be a time machine so that the days could be longer.
She has written and illustrated a few books.

This book was purchased for my four year old grandson. He loves books, usually ones about vehicles or dinosaurs. In trying to expand his interests, I got The Ice Bear, a more realistic animal story. He loved it and "reads" it often! The illustrations are outstanding! Purchasing books through Amazon is so easy and inexpensive.

'The Ice Bear' is a wonderful book, even for adults if you're young at heart. The illustrations are, as in all her books, astoundingly beautiful. The story, with its message that human actions impact the animals that share this planet with us, is well-written and easy for a child to understand, as well as being so enchanting that it will grab a child's attention (and an adult's attention) immediately. I bought this for my 7 year old niece and she adores it. And so do I!

Not only is the story magical(and, yes, I believe) but the art work is just that--art. I have kept the book one a table in the livingroom so that I might open the book and gaze frequently at the beauty displayed there. The book also relates the wonder and spirituality of animals. Did I say I believe?

Format: Hardcover
Written and illustrated by Jackie Morris, “The Ice Bear” is a short but beautiful little Arctic fairytale, one that draws heavily on the ancient stories of shapeshifters and changelings.

A newborn bear cub is stolen from its mother by a wily raven, and left for a hunter to find. Transformed into a human infant, the boy is adopted by the man and his wife, and raised as their own.

“He seldom spoke. He often smiled. And always the rave watched over him.”

When he’s seven years old, the raven uses a trail of amber stones to lead him back to his bear family, his human father in close pursuit. When he’s reconciled with both the bear and human halves of himself, he faces a choice: to live as a bear or a man?

As always, Jackie Morris’s illustrations are stunning, capturing both landscape and detail in vibrant watercolour. Everything from the fur parkas of the hunters to the anatomy of the great bears seem to have been carefully researched, and her own touches: the brilliance of the aurora, the gleam of the amber stones in the snow – are mysterious and beautiful.

Keep in mind that this is a small book - *literally*. It’s been designed for little hands (though it’s almost too beautiful to entrust to a child) and makes for a dreamy, haunting bedtime story.
