Cinq etoiles dans la nuit,

This review is from: The Ice People (Hardcover)
"The Night Of Time," as the title should read, is one of those moving, extraordinary books to which I return time and again long after I've read them. Few books have had that effect in me, but this beautiful story of a love, a civilization, a chance for humanity, lost under the ice, has remained with me ever since I read it seven years ago. I will now suggest a title that may be of interest to all those reviewers who obviously liked this book as much, or maybe more, than I did: "When the Sky Fell," by Rand and Rose Flem-Ath (available at Amazon), which deals with the very intriguing possibility that something known as "Earth crust displacement" could have moved all continents and oceans at once in the past and Antarctica, now frozen, could have been located at a much more warmer latitude. This is theory, and the authors have not forced the re-writing of any textbooks, but their idea is interesting, and they have obtained a lot of data to support it. This book is not fiction, like Berjavel's, but it ties so neatly with it that I thought I'd provide those like-minded reviewers of "The Ice People" with a chance to check a short, entertaining, and also very fascinating work. So, five stars for Rene Berjavel's book, and congratulations to all those who have read and enjoyed it. I think it's difficult to do one thing and not the other.

Found a long lost friend,

I found this book in my junior high library, and even though I had never read any SF, I read it again and again, and have never forgotten it. Off and on over the years I have looked for it, never quite sure if I was even remembering the title correctly. When I decided to look for it at Amazon, I was worried that I would find it and that it would not live up to my memories (as books you read as a child often don't), but now that I have read all of the other reviews, I am dying to get my hands on it. It was beautiful and moving.

A Kid's Review
This review is from: The Ice People (Hardcover)
My dad gave me this book a few months ago, and I LOVED it!! I was an incredible book. I've recomeded it to all my friends, but I don't think anyone else is going to read it sonce they are not avid readers and we are only in grade nine! But I still anyone who listens that this is the best book ever written. I don't understand why it's not famous and why it is so hard to find...

I'm french, and read "La nuit des temps" 10 years ago. I was looking for it for my girlfriend ( she's english), and was so pleased to read all the reviews, that i nearly cried. I could'nt imagine that other people love this book as much as i do... I read it probably more than 10 times since i've bought it.( A very nice hard packed one...)and i feel really happy to know other people share this with me... This should be an obligatory book at school, it is so true, so deep... One advise: keep your and never stop reading and reading it again and again...you'll always be more and more enchanted.

I, too, had read a long, long time ago, but one that has never ever escaped my memory. For years I have tried to find a copy of this book, hoping to once again lose myself in the incredible fantasy and love story that is 'The Ice People', but without success.I now have a daughter of 11 years of age, who I would love to be able to give this book to her as a present, and to hopefully start her out on a long and fulling lifetime of quality Science Fiction adventures. They don't get much better.

Barjavel is the only one who is able to talk about love in this way. Every description makes you not only feel the same way but live the same way. He was also an eternal lover, you can feel it, he seems so close to his female characters it appears sommetimes indicent. But what i love overall is his vision of the world as it is : cruel and meaningless with only love to guide us.

A friend gave me a collection of Rene Barjavel's stories for my birthday, and "La Nuit des Temps" is one of the many incredible stories in that collection that really took my breath away. I was amazed that he is not well known in the US. One of the most enduring qualities of his works is not that he focuses on the "sci-fi" aspect; the heart of his stories lie in the human condition. I hope all his novels will be translated and that collections of his work will be published and made available in the US. During his lifetime, Barjavel believed that the novel in its classic form is dead and that the future of novels lie in Science Fiction. If we have more writers as insightful and masterful at storytelling as Barjavel, I'd say he would have been right.

I read that book some years ago...I read it in Spanish (Nuit des Temps), so when I was looking for an English version, it was very difficult...Who can belive the name that it has in English? After reading some review I understood The Ice People, must be the book I loved. It was great to find people thinking the same about it.Now I will tell my best friend to buy so she can read in English. (Of course, I will ask her to let me read it again) THE BEST FICTION BOOK!!!

A Masterpiece !!,

I am french, and i also did read that book 10 years ago, and still can feel deep inside of me how intense that book touched me. I am actually trying to find it for my girlfriend too who is american. And i am please to see so many reviews from americans who loved that excellent book. I was afraid that the translation would somehow change something to Barjavel's magic. I am also convince that this masterpiece would do an excellent movie, and thought myself of writting the script version of it. And i'm glad that many people think the same way. Now there is no doubt this would be an hard task. But if it could be done as it has been done for the English Patient this would be perfect.

The english title for this masterpiece needs to be changed. I read this book in spanish as a kid and could never forget it. I re-read it countless times and always enjoyed it, I'd love to learn french to read it in its original language. You would not be disappointed.
