Book Description

March 6, 2012
A controversial masterpiece resurfaces in Budapest. A headless ballerina is found beneath the boardwalk at Brighton Beach. And New York's Russian mafia is about to collide with the equally ruthless art world....

Maddy Blume, an ambitious young art buyer for a Manhattan hedge fund, is desperate to track down a priceless painting by Marcel Duchamp, the most influential artist of the twentieth century.

The discovery of a woman's decapitated body thrusts criminal investigator Alan Powell into a search for the same painting, with its enigmatic image of a headless nude.

And a Russian thief and assassin known as the Scythian must steal the painting to save his reputation--and his life.

The murderous race is on. And in the lead is an insidious secret society intent on reclaiming the painting for reasons of its own--and by any means necessary....

Review

"Alec Nevala-Lee is no debut author; he must have been a thriller writer in some past life. This one has everything: great writing, great characters, great story, great bad guy....The Icon Thief is smart, sophisticated, and has enough fast-paced action to keep anyone up past midnight."

--Paul Christopher, New York Times bestselling author

"Twists and turns aplenty....Add a storyline where almost nothing is as it first appears, and where the plot turns around on itself to reveal startling contradictions, and the result is a book that grips and holds the reader like a vise. I devoured it in a single sitting."

--James Becker, New York Times bestselling author

"Alec Nevala-Lee comes roaring out of the gate with a novel that's as thrilling as it is thought-provoking, as unexpected as it is erudite. The Icon Thief is a wild ride through a fascinating and morally complex world, a puzzle Duchamp himself would have applauded. Bravo."

--Jesse Kellerman, national bestselling author of The Genius

"Nevala-Lee's cerebral, exciting debut proves there's plenty of life left in the Da Vinci Code-style thriller as long as fresh venues and original characters enhance the familiar plot elements and genre tropes...Leaves a few loose ends to be resolved in what is sure to be the eagerly awaited sequel."

Highly recommended for the art lover and amateur sleuth alike. Nevala-Lee will take you by the hand and guide you into the seedy back streets and under the boardwalks of New York's Brighton Beach. You'll lose yourself in a world of art heists, mafia murders, secret societies and criminal investigations; a world which will hold you in its grip until the very last page. Prepare to be stumped and riveted.

5.0 out of 5 stars A treat for all readers March 6, 2012
By asa2p
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Anyone that is a fan of the international thriller novel should buy this book. It's a fascinating tale of art world intrigue, replete with hedge fund honchos and Russian mobsters. Smartly plotted and well-written, each chapter simultaneously peels back layers of the mystery while captivating the reader with new intrigues. But the book is much more than just a good read. It is also a quick study of the 20th century art world and one of its most influential practitioners, Marcel Duchamp.

4.0 out of 5 stars Intrigue July 17, 2012
By Kaye
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Complex, intriguing read with a myriad of characters within a 3 plotline structure. I definitely had to keep my wits about me with this one; I needed a score card to keep all the players straight in my own head.

Disappearing and reappearing artwork, Russian mafiyeh, a dead ballerina, art hedge fund, international crime investigator and secret societies are all involved in and around the sale of Etant Donné, a very controversial painting by Marcel DuChamp, a twentieth century painter who was himself a bit of a mystery. For a debut novel the author sure managed to keep all these balls in the air while providing one heck of an intriguing and exciting story.

Any reader could safely assume that members of the Russian Mafiyeh would be brutal thugs but you'd think people in the art world would be sociable, kind types. No so here as some of these characters are anything but. Ruthless is one description that comes to mind. Their passion for art and the art world knows no boundaries; theft, murder, betrayal and backstabbing are the order of the day. No one is what they seem on the surface. Be prepared for a monumental twist at the end. For thriller or conspiracy fans, this should be high on your listThe Icon Thief

Well developed main plot, with defined characters but many other names and terms made it somewhat hard to follow. Surprising epilogue.
