Newman writes of problems and questions that are practically fresh as today’s news: what is the purpose of education? Is training for a profession sufficient to justify the claim to being educated? In what does that claim consist?

He can be somewhat difficult at times to read because he wrote for a generation blessed with longer attention spans than we have ourselves today. But he is worth the effort.

Tedious going and that pre-Victorian writing style can get boring...if one accepts the premise that 'the Church' has the final say on things academic, it will be very reinforcing. If not...get ready for mentally rebutting a lot of Newman's points. Also, he seems to be more than a bit narcissistic...
