Review

"The book is organized ... making it easy to find exactly what you're craving. [Y]ou'll have to wrestle it away from friends who get sucked in by the hundreds of step-by-step and finished-dish photos. Total eye-candy that inspires you to want to cook." --Santa Rosa Press Democrat, November 8, 2009

Featuring vivid, full-color photography on every page, The Illustrated Quick Cook is a solid guide to cooking at home on a strict time budget. Shortcuts for everyday meals, food for friends, drinks and much more are covered at length. The many ways to speed up meal preparation range from better organization of one's cupboard to "batch and freeze" techniques for making large amounts of food and preserving it, and selecting from recipes ranging from "no-cook" foods to those that require only a minimum of preparation and cooking. Of special note are the vegetarian options (vegetarian dinner recipes include such delights as "Chunky ratatouille", "Lemony dal", and "Zucchini stuffed with raisins, red onion, and pine nuts"). An easy-to-use resource enthusiastically recommended for anyone who wants to enjoy the benefits of home-cooked food but has little time to spend - especially parents seeking to feed their children nutritious meals while balancing that responsibility with a demanding job!

I have numerous cookboooks from Julia Child on down, but this one is awesome, great pictures for every recipe, and they are not complicated, it truly is a quick cook book, and the photos make you want to try the recipes they look so great, have tried several and have not been disappointed, loved the book so much I gave one to brother for Christmas, he loves to cook but is very time conscious.

I really wanted to enjoy this book. It's quite pretty, with lots of different ideas but sadly the recipes did not stack up. We tried 4-5 and a few were ok but all of those were quite basic, things like quesadillas. The no cook fresh tomato soup was impossible to make to the directions, 6 tomatoes, 2 peppers and 2 cups of water will not fit in a standard blender! When it was done it was watery and mostly tasteless. I was able to salvage it by reducing on the stove, and adding herbs and spices.
The cook and prep times were both too short on everything and it was frustrating having to adjust every recipe so it was edible.
I really wanted to try some of the tarts and pies but most of them called for pans that I didn't have to hand. If this is to be advertised as a great starter book then it's not helpful to have pans that are not easy to come by. One I couldn't locate even searching on Amazon!
Again I REALLY had hopes for this one but I'm glad I didn't spring for some of the more spendy meals. I feel that if you can't make the simple recipes and have them come out delicious then it's best not to lay out the cash for the more expensive ones.

The Illustrated Quick Cook: "Easy Entertaining, After-Work Recipes, Cheap Eats" is a great book for those who have little experience in cooking for themselves or for others. Particularly worthwhile mentioning is that there are pictures, pictures, pictures. The new/non-cook will know what the dish should look like and this gives the cook confidence and inspiration to make the dish. It's great for those who have time constraints who work and those on a budget as well. There is an abundance of information on cooking "terminology" like poaching, searing, frying and also a great deal of information on the different kinds of measurement tools one should use in a recipe. I would highly recommend it for the new/non-cook, as well as "seasoned" cooks. Buy it. You won't be disappointed.

I checked this book out from the library and liked so many of the recipes that I decided to buy the book. The recipes are simple, straightforward and use ingredients that are available. I only have about 6 or 7 cookbooks that I like and use; this is one of them.
