If you are troubled by the political impasse in the United States and the very imperfect functioning of our economic system, and if the questions that Tony Judt raised in "Ill Fares the Nation" resonate with you, you should read this book, which goes deeply into causes of what is ailing us, and also squarely and realistically raises potential remedies.

It is a great follow-on to the wide-spread concern about growing income and capital inequality. It shows how it impacts so many aspect of our society like mortality, health, violence, friendships, participation in community activities, etc. The more up to date book by Wilkinson and Pickett is the "Spirit Level"

The best book I've read on what is wrong with U.S. exactly. Unfortunately I have no hope that we'll try to change the present situation and create a society that reflects the actual material prosperity of this nation instead of first world nation of third world conditions.
