I truly loved this marriage book, and I have read a lot of marriage books and have a master's degree in the counseling field.

I knew nothing about the Strawberry's beforehand, but had seen their interview on the 700 Club and was impressed. I wondered what they had to share that was unique. It is this: God can change a couple individually and together in profound ways--this book gives the nitty-gritty work of how it happened for these two people. They also lead you as a reader right along with them on their journey via "Suggestions for Reflection" at the end of each chapter that you can journal around, pray regarding, etc. Their story is really realistic and raw--they truly had so many personal and marital problems that it makes you shake your head in wonder at how God turned both of their lives around! Although God did it, it also included lots of hard, hard work on each of their parts!

The book is broken up into two parts: (1) "Me"--the two individuals in a marriage, along with the Strawberry's story, written individually in each person's voice, and then (2) "We"--about the couple together. Their suggestions and advice is practical and completely Biblical. This is a deeply Christian book with a hard-core Biblical approach, so if that is not what you're looking for, you'll be disappointed. Actually, though I think the book would be worth reading anyway, because it will still amaze you at their transformation.

They write from the perspective of personal experience rather than "marriage counselor" and actually I found that refreshing. They had the worst possible set-up for marriage, including multiple divorces, drug and alcohol problems, idealistic beliefs about marriage, and more--much more.

Toxic relationships often lead to dysfunctional marriages. This was certainly the case with Darryl and Tracy Strawberry.

They met in 2003 at a Narcotics Anonymous convention in Florida. Tracy was recovering from addictions to alcohol, cocaine, crack, and meth. Darryl was not in recovery. He was still using and had gone to prison for his drug violations. He was also millions of dollars in debt. Both had been divorced twice and lost custody of their children from those marriages.

Darryl and Tracy brought more baggage into a relationship than we can imagine. Still, like most dysfunctional people, that didn’t deter them from taking the plunge again.

Several tumultuous years followed. Tracy spent most of her time rescuing Darryl from crack houses and trying to cope with his rampant infidelity. Even so, they married.

Sounds like a mess, doesn’t it? It was. Yet this is an amazing book on many levels. Even though the Strawberrys are painfully candid about the baggage they brought to the marriage table, “The Imperfect Marriage” is an easy book to read and digest. That’s due in part to its unique format. Both Tracy and Darryl tell their stories together in each chapter in first person, letting you know who is talking and when. It works. And very well.

The raw honesty in “The Imperfect Marriage” is impressive. The Strawberrys discuss the ugly truth of their marriage openly and thoroughly. You’re never left guessing. Nothing is hidden. And they do this on purpose. Their goal is to offer their readers all the information and workable strategies they need to succeed. The healing has to start somewhere. And the best place to begin is with the naked truth. So they do.

This is definitely the case in the codependent chapter, “The Spouse-in-Waiting.
