Book Description

October 25, 2011
"I SPENT MY ENTIRE LIFE PLAYING NERDS. . ."—Barry Livingston

A true Hollywood survivor, Barry Livingston is one of the few child stars who turned early success into a lifelong career. As "Ernie" on the 1960s sit-com My Three Sons—which also featured his real-life brother Stanley as "Chip"—Barry become instantly recognizable for his horn-rimmed glasses and goofy charm. Five deCAes later, after working on TV shows like Mad Men and Desperate Housewives, and in feature films like Zodiac and The Social Network, Barry Livingston is one actor who knows The Importance of Being Ernie. . .

In this fascinating and funny memoir, Barry reveals his most unforgettable anecdotes: Working on set with Fred McMurray, Ozzie and Harriet, Lucille Ball and Dick Van Dyke. Riding a limousine with Elvis Presley. Trying to upstage Ron "Opie" Howard. Even shooting a Superbowl beer commercial with Brad Pitt. At first, Barry's lazy eye and horn-rimmed glasses nearly derailed his career, getting him kicked off his first major film starring Paul Newman. Eventually, his "nerdy" look became his biggest asset, landing Barry a recurring role on Ozzie & Harriet and a regular part on My Three Sons. Fifty years later, Barry is still going strong—from the stage and small screen to to featured film roles opposite Adam Sandler and Robert Downey, Jr.. Like most Hollywood actors, Barry experienced some incredible highs and lows along the way, but he never gave up. "I've been around half a century," he affirms. "And I'm not going away." This is how one child star beat the odds and survived the dark side of the Hollywood dream factory—with charm, wit, determination. . .and big horn-rimmed glasses. This is The Importance of Being Ernie.

Barry Livingston has been a professional actor on stage and screen for more than fifty years. Best known for his role as "Ernie" on the long-running TV program, My Three Sons, Livingston continues to appear regularly in feature films and television shows. He is married with two children, and lives in Los Angeles.

Praise For The Importance Of Being Ernie

"This wryly told saga of a child star who miraculously avoided the crash-and-burn fate of so many of the once-famous. . . an engaging tale of the unusual life of a humorous, modest, and observant man. Barry Livingston delivers a frank and funny tale of TV, movies, and family life." —Brent Maddock, co-author of Tremors and Short Circuit

"For a child star, he's almost normal. This poor kid had to sit on William Frawley's lap we're lucky he's not on a roof with a rifle. . .. Barry is one of those rare child stars who grew up to become an accomplished adult actor. Having logged fifty years in show business, working with everyone from Lucille Ball and Jack Benny to Brad Pitt and Robert Downey, Jr., he's got a great story to tell." —Paul Jackson, Producer Charmed and Sliders.

"I have known Barry Livingston since he was nine years old. He always made me laugh. Now he's kept me awake reading his wonderful autobiography. There's a lot of talent in those size eight shoes." —Gene Reynolds, director of TV's M.A.S.H.and Promised Land

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved it! November 1, 2011
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Barry Livingston is a born storyteller. His conversational style and self-depricating approach combine to make this a fun, informative read. More importantly, I think that his journey from child stardom through tough times only to return to success as a journeyman character actor is an inspiration to any artist. Failure can curse only those who give up, and Barry Livington never did. Well done!

5.0 out of 5 stars Nerdy. Goofy. That's Our Barry. January 30, 2012
Format:Hardcover
He was the goofy one, the young kid with those nerdy glasses and that goofy charm. Barry Livingston is one of the few child stars who turned early success (as "Ernie" on the '60s sitcom My Three Sons) into a game of survival, beating the odds and surviving the dark side of the Hollywood dream factory--with charm, wit, determination . . . and big horn-rimmed glasses. His autobio is chockfull of nifty backstage babble, from the early daze as one of Paul Newman's kids in the 1958 comedy Rally Round the Flag, Boys, to featured spots on such popular sitcom as The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet and The Dick Van Dyke Show. We howled as Livingston recalls his episodes of The Lucy Show back in 1963; in one episode, Lucy attempts to give Barry a haircut: "To a nine-year-old- kid, there was nothing more terrifying than to have Lucille Ball coming at you with a giant pair of scissors."
When Sons was canned, Barry managed to land a few parts, but being typecast as Ernie stopped the calls from coming. Like many child stars who are big stars one day and has-beens the next, no longer in demand by Hollywood, Barry turned to drugs, yet another casualty in an industry that was littered with the ghosts of child stars who could make the transition to adulthood and steady employment.
That was then. Livingston moved to New York, studied acting and faster than you can say "Fred MacMurray," his career zoomed back to the top, firmly establishing himself as a hard-working and always reliable character actor. A delight!

4.0 out of 5 stars A toe-Tapping good book November 26, 2011
Format:Hardcover
I was very excited to hear about this book. I love autobiographies of tv stars from the early years of TV and especially child stars and Barry Livingston fits the bill perfectly. I loved reading the stories of his early jobs before becoming a regular on My Three Sons. One of my favorite chapters was about the transition from William Frawley to william Demerest. Fascinating stuff and the story exemplifying Fred MacMurray's frugality was hysterical. I also enjoyed the Fred DeCordova stories and the Elvis Story was pretty cool too.

The book depicts Barry's struggle to stay in show business no matter what and all the routes he took to accomplish this. I always wonder what actors do between jobs and this book helped to shed light on it. Barry Livingston is definitely a Hollywood survivor. Would love to see him on The Big Bang Theory.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Importance of being Ernie.... November 7, 2011
Format:Hardcover
I grew up watching "My Three Sons." I could not wait for this book! When I ordered I paid for faster shipping, to get it ASAP!!! Good books are hard to find these days! Well...this is not a good book! It is a GREAT book! Barry Livingston carries you to his world with honesty and great insight, humor, compassion. There is no ego or power trips here! I could not put it down, so my chores at home suffered greatly! But it was so worth the money and the time spent with Barry! My only regret??? The faster I read and turned the pages..I knew it would end!! I plan on buying more for friends and family for the holidays..the price is so great and what a great conversation piece for a book club or close friends and family! Thank you Barry Livingston, for the best book I have read in a while...could I dare ask for a sequel?? It leaves you wanting more! You can't go wrong with this book...so don't miss it!

3.0 out of 5 stars Well-written, but not enough detail about being Ernie September 13, 2012
By Jen
Format:Hardcover
I fell in love with My Three Sons when I was a kid and they showed it on TV Land all of the time. I was interested in learning more about the show. While Barry has a good writing style and the pages flow pretty easily, I feel he could have elaborated much more about his time on My Three Sons, his main claim to fame. The show lasted for 12 years, and I feel he could have added a lot more to the story about his actual experience on the show. He didn't elaborate on much with regards to MTS. He is finished with talking about the show less than halfway through the book, which makes for a duller second half. He goes into great detail about some of his lesser accomplishments, which can get a little tedious. I would have much preferred to read more about his experiences with My Three Sons. Oh well, I guess we can't have everything.

I would still recommend this book to fans of Mr. Livingston or My Three Sons. I would give it 3 1/2 out of 5 stars. I will be looking out for him in some of my favorite TV shows that I didn't even realize he was in, mainly Mad Men. How did I miss that?

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Company with an old friend. May 30, 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I grew up on My Three Sons, am roughly Barry's age, and never really thought of him as a nerd. The "sons" on that show were nice, likable, guys that you'd be happy to hang out with, and in this case the actors themselves are, too. This book is your chance to hang out with Barry and he is definitely good company. There is a lot of funny stuff and interesting insight from someone we watched grow up on TV. I would pick this up intending to fill in some idle time, and end up glued for several chapters. This is one you don't want to end. Spend some time with this guy who is cooler than he thinks. Definitely recommended.
