Wow! What a find. For anyone new to the study of Inca history and culture, or for anyone traveling to Peru to visit Macchu Pichu and other Inca sites, this book is a must. It is gorgeously produced, hundreds of beautiful color pictures on glossy paper, with every topic of cultural, historical, sociological, or artistic interest addressed in just a couple of pages. So I guess it's not intended for readers with an already deep knowledge of the Inca culture, but more for those just beginning their study of the subject. I don't understand the intricacies of what makes a book a "bargain book" or not, but this book is definitely not something you'd expect to find on a remainders table. So, for whatever reason, thank you, Amazon!

We tend to order books after a trip, and I was interested in finding one that would explain in detail what the guides had been telling us as we visited the sites around the Cusco/Machu Pichu area. This is a good summary, with pictures to illustrate the text. I won't ever return to a 3rd world country - I would recommend finding a good virtual tour to any interested parties, where you can flush the toilet paper and drink the water out of the tap without fear of getting sick enough that death looks good. I would recommend this book as an important resource for anyone interested in the early history of the Incas and their influence on South America.

This book by David Jones is an outstanding resource. The book is beautifully illustrated and covers many topics relevant to Inca life. The book is written at a level where one does not have to be an advanced history scholar to understand the main insights and conclusions of the author. The author explains everyday life of Inca communities. Religious beliefs and ceremonies are clearly articulated. Architectural innovations are explained at length.

This book presents several examples of rich and intricate Inca art. There are beautiful pictures of geoglyph formations. There are informative sections on Inca law, ruling powers, and cultural norms and mores. Although the book is written in plain language that is readily accessible to anyone, the scholarship is top-notch and scholars will benefit from utilizing this as a resource. This is an excellent book on many levels. It is very interesting and informative.
