Any description of this saga will fail to do it justice until you experience the density of the story and the beauty of Moebius' work by yourself.

Since the book is more a european phenomenon, Americans are less likely to be aware of this book, as compared to Graphic novels like MAUS.

Reviewing such an esteemed book as The Incal, a work of art most contemporary writers and illustrators hold in such high regard, is a somewhat daunting challenge. It is a difficult text to approach without acknowledging the prejudices of time and evolving storytelling conventions. Furthermore, as such an influential text, ignoring the testimonies of not only various comics industry professionals but also luminaries of cinema and science fiction literature as not to cloud or influence one's own interpretation is also perplexing. Attempting to contextualize the work within the period of its creation or within Jodorowsky's own canon is one analytical tool some first time readers may choose to pursue.

The Incal is the offspring of a seven-year collaboration by Alejandro Jodorowsky and Moebius between 1981 and 1988. Originally released in French by Les Humanoïdes Associés, the 2011 collection includes all six Une Aventure de John DiFool stories--L'Incal Noir (The Black Incal), L'Incal Lumière (The Luminous Incal), Ce Qui Est En Bas (What Lies Beneath), Ce Qui Est En Haut (What Is Above), La Cinquième Essence: Galaxie Qui Songe (The Fifth Essence Part One: The Dreaming Galaxy), and La Cinquième Essence: La Planète DiFool (The Fifth Essence Part Two: Planet DiFool). Additionally, the edition also restores the colors by Yves Chaland on The Black Incal, Isabelle Beaumeney-Joannet on The Luminous Incal, What Lies Beneath, and What Is Above, and Zoran Janjetov on the remaining two titles.

In terms of story, the first chapter of The Incal is potentially the most entertaining for its originality and humor.

It Moebius for cripes sake -- he's amazing. But the images are too small on the page to do his work justice. There's way too much white space, and the images could've been as much as 10% larger, or perhaps go for a larger format. I shouldn't have to squint to look at Moebius' work.

I was very reluctant to spent $175 on this book but am very happy I did; this is a phenomenal graphic novel. I am a big Moebuis fan so was tempted to buy this, and then did some research. It is available in other editions, for instance you could piece it together in various parperbacks or get the French copies. But that would still be expensive and this is the unedited, uncensored version, from the original art proofs, in its full glory in one beautiful package. The story is fantastic. If you are a fan of Blade Runner, The Fifth Element or noir pulp ficticon (like Raymond Chandler) you will like this. The story is intricate and thoughtful and the art is stunning top quality Moebius. I highly recommend getting a copy if you can afford it. Perhaps they will reprint this, but it came out in 2010 so I expect it will not be for at least a couple of more years until the movie (long rumored) is released. Highest Recommendation!

The Incal is a unique saga that combines politics, religion, spirituality, sex, violence, satire, beauty, philosophy, science fiction, fantasy, metaphysics, and an amazing collaboration between two masters of their craft, Jean Giraud "Moebius" and Alejandro Jodorowsky "Jodo". Any description of this saga will fail to do it justice until you experience the density of the story and the beauty of Moebius' work by yourself. The actual presentation of this saga is not unlike the "Absolute" series, in an oversized hardcover with an elegant slipcase. The quality of the printing is absolutely pristine, and they even went back and reproduced the original colors. Ridiculously, only 750 copies were printed, making it extremely easy for collectors to assume this title would go up in value extremely fast. As you can see from the sellers here, it has already appreciated in value 100% (the original price was $99). I can't wait until technology and a visionary director dares to shoot this saga as a trilogy in the future.

After reading the first two volumes of the new Prophet series, I was thirsty for another sci-fi universe to explore. Reading reviews and recommendations brought me first to the Metabarons (a spinoff of The Incal) and then ultimately to The Incal itself. When I saw the beautiful gold hardcover volume in my local comics store I was excited to take a look inside.

The first thing that I noted was the quality of the product. The book is bound in a nice thick hardcover with a gold colored satin finish. I found the cover design to be simple yet distinctive and appealing with the retro font and attractive coloring. The paper is thick and glossy. The product is finished with a marker ribbon sewn into the binding, which I appreciate since I am normally one to dog-ear pages. The only complaint I have heard with this edition is that the dimensions of the book are not large enough to properly display the artwork. I did not find this to be the case but I do agree that there is quite a bit of white space on the page that could have been used more effectively.

A quick thumb through reveals the vividly colored artwork by Moebius. This is the one universally lauded aspect of the book and I have to agree with others' praise. The artwork is a fantastic blend of realism and caricature in an unmistakable European '80's style. One minor drawback of the artwork is sometimes the caricature elements (e.g. DiFool's exaggerated facial features) give a "wacky" tone to the artwork, when I really wanted a more serious portrayal of the characters. This gave me some pause at first but ultimately did not deter me from buying the book.

I will not get into much detail about the plot, but I first wanted to mention the positive aspects of the story before I list my complaints with it.
