Book Description

This is the second edition of FRANKENSTEIN VIGILANTE: THE INCORRUPTIBLES, revised and re-edited to coincide with the release of Book Two in the series, THE FEAR. Widely acclaimed, Lawrence and Trengove's first new full-length novel in many years is a steampunk adventure which, while it features some familiar tropes (steam technology, Victorian fashions, transgressive eroticism) pushes the genre into original and startling territory.

The story is set in The Smoke, a dystopian city-state whose overlords, The Commission, keep the population firmly in their place with the help of corrupt law enforcement and merciless mobsters the Silencios. The heroes are a crew of idealistic young men and women, the Incorruptibles, led by Cerval Frankenstein, direct descendant of the original Doctor, whose fearsome secret weapon is the giant Thorsten Laverack and his mighty steam-powered prosthetic arm.

Unfolding in roller-coaster scenes of violence, wild sex and dark humour, THE INCORRUPTIBLES reflects many of the left-field perspectives of Lawrence and Trengove’s other books, bringing steampunk and fantasy fiction to a new, wider audience. The second volume of FRANKENSTEIN VIGILANTE: THE STEAMPUNK SERIES, THE FEAR is also now available.

Praise for Peter Lawrence and Chris Trengove: IT'S YOUR MONEY IN MY POCKET, DEAR, NOT MINE IN YOURS. "... well-observed... unmistakably the start of an irresistible composite talent." (The Times) "... a very funny novel... though not one for puritan readers." (Manchester Evening News) UP THE PICTURES (ENGULFED IN A TIDE OF FILTH) "... wickedly honest... full of finger-lickin' good digs at distasteful modern horrors..." FRANKENSTEIN VIGILANTE: THE INCORRUPTIBLES: "Hissing with cinematic steam fuelled action plus an occasional smokey backfire of female dominated sex." (Amazon UK) "A rollicking ride through sci-fi, fantasy... adult porn, gang warfare, and a dozen or so other genres... all presented with crackling energy and a bawdy sense of humor." (Amazon US)

2.0 out of 5 stars Amateurish June 3, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I was looking for something different to read, and thought that this would be a refreshing break. Maybe I didn't understand what they were going for, maybe I'm not their target audience. It started off with a decent story and a fairly fresh reimagining of the Frankenstein story; but then it quickly devolved into some unbelievable characters and incidents. I also had an issue with the Steampunk elements. It's very possible that I don't have enough experience with Steampunk stories, but I felt that some of the elements were just tacked on so that they could say "hey look.. it's steampunk..we added new words that sound like an amalgam of current words"

I think that this could have been a story that I enjoyed, but please work on the characterization more.. and make the Steampunk elements the background, it should be a setting for a story, not shoved in the reader's face just to show that it's different.

3.0 out of 5 stars Too camp June 30, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I agree with the other reviewers concerning the creativity of the world and the well realized characters. However, the writing style was too stilted for my taste and I could not finish the book. It was obviously written in a pulp style and while I love the pulps for some reason something seemed out of sync for me. If you are into camp and the pulps you should greatly enjoy the read, if you are looking for a more 'modern?' style than it is best avoided.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Citizen Kane of Steampunk! January 19, 2013
By Murph
Format:Kindle Edition
WOW! What a Crazy, Wild Ride by those Two Madmen, Lawrence & Trengove!

Head Spinner, Page Turner and Brain Burner. It's so full of Steampunk, Violence, Action

Sex and Brilliant Craziness and Mayhem that one needs to wear a HazMat Suit while Reading.

The Land of The Smoke is a Whacked-Out, Art-Deco, Electric (without Electricity) World that smacks of Orwell,

BRAZIL, Kafka and Anthony Burgess that is Sledgehammered in the Readers Soul. Keep The Lights ON and

take good Mental Notes because this Psycho Funhouse moves so fast, it doesn't stop for Amateurs or those

that are Faint-Of-Heart. If that isn't enough, FRANKENSTEIN LIVES! Yet again but in a way that actually seems

like it is the most Lifelike of all the Frankenstein Tales if You can believe that one. Bravo! Authors Lawrence & Trengove

but I won't be Inviting You for Cocktails or Dinner because I never want to get Up Close and Personal with such Sickos!

The Reading is done and now I need a very long Shower to wash away the Steampunk Funk followed by a very stiff Bloody Mary.

4.0 out of 5 stars High Paced Action with Flair January 18, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
There is an ever increasing number of steampunk novels out there and a proportionally smaller and smaller percentage of them are worth reading.

Frankenstein Vigilante is definitely worth reading.

The world is complex and interesting, well described, vibrant, and visual. It is bizarre, a little reminiscent of China Miéville's city creation, New Crobuzon. Not only is the world well realized, the double-handful of characters are well fleshed out, a notable accomplishment considering that the book is only 200 pages long.

For me, what made this book stand out the most was the pacing. The story progresses rapidly with little downtime.

The story is fun, with many homages both overt and subtle to the books and stories that preceded the steampunk genre.

Get it, read it, you won't be sorry you did.

5.0 out of 5 stars SO MUCH FUN!!! February 4, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
FRANKENSTEIN VIGILANTE is just some of the most fun I've had reading in a long time. Loaded it to my Kindle and carreied it around with me for a week. Everytime I had a moment I was calling it up, reading a much as I could, then anticipating future pages. When I was a kid I was hooked on the DOC SAVAGE series -- this reminds me of that feeling I had when I waited for my parents to say goodnight and then, zip -- flashlight on, Doc Savage open. Sure, it's a little more violent and sexier than Doc, but, then, so am I. I hope this becomes a series because I really want to see where the authors take this. There are many, many more stories for Cerval Franks and the Incorruptibles. AND WHO DOESN'T LOVE STEAM PUNK!!!? Please, somebody, a movie!

4.0 out of 5 stars Frankenstein Vigilante - Steampunk January 17, 2013
By andrew
Format:Kindle Edition
A wonderful heroic blood-spattered "Gangs of New York" set in a future-past City as strange as anything in "Dune" with all the hardware designed by Jules Verne and Assoc. Automatic weapons and crossbows, carrier pigeons the size of Great Danes, vacuum tubes, light weight chariots drawn by pink-eyed albino ponies, electric motorcycles..and Thor's magnificent and temperamental prosthetic steam hammer right arm. Reminiscent of the science fiction serials of the '50s and 60's. A classic comic book series in the making. I can't wait for the next one.

3.0 out of 5 stars The power in a name November 26, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Any time you invoke the Frankenstein name you are going to be burdened with expectations. In this book the authors invoke the names of Mary Shelly and Roosevelt as well but with less satisfactory results. In fact, Shelly Merry is one of the weakest characters dispute having overall the most time in the book. She is mostly a two dimensional character whose purpose seems to be limited to a sex object. Still there is potential here waiting to be mined.
