Book Description

October 7, 2011 Doc Atlas Onmibus
Set in the era of the 1940s and 50s, this collection of pulp-style novellas follows the adventures of the mighty Doc Atlas and crew from the jungles of Central America to the frozen tundra of the North Pole. Whether they’re prowling the streets of Manhattan, investigating reports of a killer gorilla (with the purported brain of an executed criminal) or a crashed flying saucer in a small town named Roswell, New Mexico, Doc and company always see the investigation through to the end. Written with historical hindsight, these tales combine the best elements of the pulp era with actual historical figures and events.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great collection of this original Doc Savage pastiche October 29, 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Doc Atlas is a Doc Savage pastiche created by Michael A. Black and Ray Lovato. This collection brings together all the previous published Doc Atlas novellas. In additional, there is a Doc Atlas novel "Melody of Vengeance" by Michael A. Black that is available separately.

Doc Savage and friends were all WWI veterans (which is when they met) and the heyday of their adventures was the 1930s and 40s. Doc Atlas and friends are all WWII veterans (which is when they met), and all the stories are set in post-WWII. So not a total copy.

Doc Atlas has just 2 assistants, plus a girlfriend (which Doc Savage didn't have). One assistant is a lawyer like Ham, the other is physically like Monk, but its not clear what other talents he brings in. The Ham analog is named "Ace" Assante a former Captain in the Army Air Force and bomber pilot. The Monk analog is "Mad Dog" Deagan, a former Lt. Colonel in either the Army or Marine (not sure). Doc's girlfriend is a reporter, Penelope Cartier, who writes up his adventures (under a pseudonym) and publishes them in the pulp magazines. Interesting idea, except this was the twilight of the pulp magazines. Doc Atlas also has a group of secretaries running his office (the main one "Mad Dog" hits on), and some kind of computer. Missing is the equivalent of Doc Savage's special 'flearun' elevator from his Empire State Building headquarters to his Hudson River warehouse of vehicles, as well as Doc Savage's 'special commissions' from police to aid in his work.

Bottomline Doc Atlas is a Doc Savage pastiche which the author decided NOT to place exactly in the same time period and be a total mirror of Doc. And that is good, as he can make him more original. He is a doctor, inventor and explorer. Big, blonde, and with yellow eyes (dark amber). But he is not emotionless like Doc, and has a relationship with Penny (something Doc avoided). He's not above killing his opponents if forced. No mercy bullets or the like.

All the stories were first serialized in several fanzines like Fading Shadows' "Double Danger Tales" and Gryphon Book's Gryphon Double. They were originally credited to only Michael A. Black. Ray Lovato had a hand in them as well, and so if finally credited.

"The Riddle of the Sphinx" appeared in "Double Danger Tales" #52. This tale is a standard one of Mayan treasure that would easily fit as an Indiana Jones-type story. Also introduced is a childhood sweetheart of Doc Atlas (again, showing the differences between Atlas and Savage).

"Desert Shadows" appeared in "Double Danger Tales" #34, and is a tale dealing with Roswell, NM and stories of crashed alien spacecraft.

"Killer Gorilla" first appeared as "Gorilla Killer" in "Double Danger Tales" #16, and was later reprinted in the book "Tales of Masks and Mayhem" v1 (still available from Altus Press). Doc has to deal with a case of a dead mobster whose brain has been implanted in a gorilla.

"Arctic Terror" first appeared in "Gryphon Double" #9 (Gryphon Books, 1994) and later reprinted in Fading Shadows' "Exciting UFO Stories" #3 and later still reprinted in the book "Tales of Masks and Mayhem" v2. This story is set in 1951, and pits Doc Atlas against something like the "Thing" (from the old b/w movie). Or does it?

"Satan Plague" first appeared in "Gryphon Double" #19 (Gryphon Books, 1999) and later reprinted in the book "Tales of Masks and Mayhem" v3. This one is set during the 1951 during the McCarthy era, and reveals some info on Doc's background.

Artwork from the original fanzine appearances are included, which is great. And the cover by the great Geof Darrow is a great coup.

I understand a new Doc Atlas novella will appear in the upcoming "Tales of Masks and Mayhem" v4. I look forward to it.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Incredible Adventures of Doc Atlas November 12, 2011
Format:Paperback
With the Cold War in full force, Doc Atlas and his two aides, "Mad Dog" Deagan and "Ace" Assente are prepared to go anywhere to stop spies or criminals from accomplishing their dirty work. Accompanying them on their missions is Doc's girlfriend, reporter Penelope Cartier.

Five exciting tales are in this thick volume, each with enough pulp action to satisfy any reader. The authors, Michael A. Black and Ray Lovato grew up on heroes like Doc Savage and The Shadow, and Doc Atlas owes a lot to the Man of Bronze, but is his own man.

This collection is a must for adventure fans, capturing the feel of a bygone era when pulp magazines entertained the masses with fast action of heroic tales of daring-do. With a fantastic cover by Geof Darrow, and great interior illustrations by Tim Faurote and Matt Lovato, Oak Tree Press nicely produced this omnibus. Highly recommended for adventure fans, young and old, Doc Atlas will take the reader on a thrill ride that doesn't stop.

5.0 out of 5 stars ACTION-PACKED PULP ADVENTURE January 8, 2012
Format:Paperback
THE INCREDIBLE ADVENTURES OF DOC ATLAS is a skillfully done homage to Doc Savage and other pulp heroes of the 40s and 50s, with perhaps a dash of Indiana Jones thrown in from more modern times.

Doc Atlas himself is patterned closely after Doc Savage, but is less of a super hero and more of a realistic human, complete with emotions, who happens to possess a highly developed level of mental and physical skills. Along with his crew of post-World War II sidekicks, including reporter/girlfriend Penelope Cartier, Doc is prepared to go wherever necessary to confront villainy--from the frozen north to the tropical jungles to eerie southwest deserts where an alien threat may be lurking to the murky inner city where a killer gorilla is on the loose.

The stories are intricately plotted and very well written. A number of historical figures are sprinkled in here and there and the fictional characters are equally colorful and richly drawn. All in all, the final result is good old-fashioned pulp action done as well as it's ever been done by anybody. If you like high adventure and lots of thrills and excitement, then you won't want to miss this fine collection of stories.

Strongly recommended.
