Book Description

When bright young graduate Jimi Jones is refused a job at VastTel, the nation's biggest phone company, he has no idea it's because the company actively avoids recruiting anyone with a spark of intelligence. Thankfully, the firm’s institutionalised incompetence means he gets the job anyway.
What follows is an intricate web of murder plots, government conspiracies and rampant tanning. Oh, and the future of the entire nation.

In his first novel journalist Phil Dobbie draws on his frustrated years in telecommunications to draw a rational explanation about why the industry is so out of control. Surely, if they all offer such bad service, it has to have been planned that way.

About the Author

Phil Dobbie is an author, freelance broadcaster, podcaster, journalist, copywriter and marketing person. He started life working in local radio in the UK before jetting off to the other side of the world to pursue a marketing career in Australia. Since he was 14 he was always going to write a book - at 46 he managed to get the first one finished and has three more ideas bubbling away in his head. He wants his first book to sell enough to justify the time to write the rest.

"I love to write," he says, "but as a journalist with kids who insist on being fed, my first priority is to write stuff that I know I will get paid for. Children don't do well waiting a year for potential book royalties before they can eat".

4.0 out of 5 stars A twisting, scheming plot October 24, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Phil Dobbies 'The Incumbent' is a great read; he weaves a complex plot with some outrageous characters.

At its essence the book is all about the bizarre world of major corporations, the ways they behave and the politics that make them do seemingly incomprehensible things, driven by a skewed logic of their own.

What appealed most was the way the book touched on all of the frustrations that we share when dealing with telcos, the messages that tell you how much they care about your business (while you wait patiently for forty minutes to talk to them), baffling tariffs, the lack of real competition.
