Book Description

The e-book era has launched thousands of writing careers and holds tremendous promise for future growth. Here's how one author went from self-publishing his first e-book to becoming a full-time author in a little more than a year. While offering general tips on business, craft, product development, and marketing, its primary goal is to inspire you to embrace your creative entrepreneurship and success.

Bonus essays by successful indie authors J.A. Konrath, Zoe Winters, Vincent Zandri, Guido Henkel, and Vicki Tyley and graphic designer Lon Shapiro.

Scott Nicholson is author of more than 30 books, including the Top 100 Kindle bestsellers Liquid Fear and Disintegration, as well as some books that only sell a few copies a month. He also edited the charity writing manual Write Good or Die. He published six books in the traditional press, three in the small press, and now publishes primarily as an indie author.

If you're buying this book to sell a million copies, you probably won't be happy. If you are buying this book to be happy, you probably have a better chance of selling a million copies.

5.0 out of 5 stars Do Yourself (And Your Career) A Favor: Buy This Book September 19, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
A phenomenal book, easily the best "advice" book of any kind for indie writers.

This isn't a standard "how to" book. It won't teach you the particulars on how to format an e-book or how to get the most out of twitter. Instead, it teaches something far more valuable: How to think the right way. And more than that, the author shows you how to apply that thinking to all the practical aspects of an indie writer's life.

And anyway, most "how to" books are of limited use. They may show you how to publish your book, and impart some marketing tips, but most of them will only show you one path - which may or may not be suitable for you. This book teaches you how to find your own path.

Scott Nicholson takes a philosophical approach to the writer's life. Success, for him, is defined by happiness, not sales, ranking, or money. This book is a guide to increasing your professional happiness as a writer.

If that all sounds a little Deepak Chopra to you, don't worry, there is no New Age BS or anything like that. It's a blueprint for finding out what your own personal writing goals are, and how to achieve them without feeling like a huckster.

I read this in about 24 hours, which is the first time I can say that about a non-fiction book - usually I dip in and out of them over time, but this was genuinely gripping.

The tone is confident without being pushy, and wise without being "knowing". The author makes some points which might initially seem counter-intuitive, but he backs them up with logic and by drawing on his extensive experience as a journalist, freelancer, trade published writer, and indie author.

People talk about thinking outside the box. Scott Nicholson lives outside the box, and this book is all the richer for it. Do yourself (and your career) a favor - buy this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring is an understatement May 31, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book is not only a must read for anyone taking a chance with the Indie Publishing career, it is a good read for anyone who writes and publishes. "Corporate Publishers" or whatever, you can learn a lot about what type of mind set you will need to be happy not only with writing, but writing and making a living at it. This is not a get rich writing book. It is a very realistic approach and it is a wonderful tool for learning, not only how difficult it is to make a career as a writer, but to be successful enough to maybe make a living.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Handbook for all Indie Authors May 23, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Scott Nicholson's wisdom and brilliant observations born out of years of experience as both a struggling and highly successful author make this book a MUST for all writers--new and battle-tested alike. I also enjoyed the helpful insights from other successful authors in the still-new frontier of ebooks like J.A Konrath, Zoe Winters, and Vincent Zandri. As for Nicholson's own insights, they have influenced my outlook and game plan as I seek to attain lasting presence and success in this crazy business. I'll be keeping "The Indie Journey" handy.--Aiden James, author of "The Vampires' Last Lover" and "Cades Cove"
