Book Description

Praise for The Infidel...

“The Infidel is an intelligent can’t-put-it-down adventure story written by an author who knows the heart and guts of NATO’s war in Afghanistan. If you want to know what we’re up against, read this book.” — Karl Marlantes, Author, Matterhorn

“Shepherd’s boots on the ground experience exposes the raw and rugged beauty of Afghanistan and its people. His high intensity narrative is as bone jarring as it is gripping and provides valuable insight in to this complex country.”
— Nic Robertson, Sr. International Correspondent, CNN

“An old Afghan hand, Bob’s fingertips drip with the detail readers devour – from weapons and tactics to people and places. However, his knowledge is bang up to date and his insight into the political and social effects of military campaigns rival any Newsnight commentator. More than that, Bob’s a great soldier who’s also a great storyteller. His characters are believable, his plot is epic in scale and his style blends muscle with understanding. This book is as comfortable on a shelf beside Kipling, Conan Doyle and Conrad as it is beside Lee Child.”
—Stephen Armstrong, Sunday Times journalist

WHERE ARMIES FALL TWO MEN WILL RISE…

When Islamic militants infiltrate an Afghan counter-narcotics program, disaster is averted thanks to Special Forces veterans John Patterson and Dusty Miller. But when fallout from the affair threatens to topple NATO’s fragile Afghan alliance, John and Dusty suddenly find themselves on the wrong side of the law.

Alone and on the run, one place on earth holds the key to their innocence—Nuristan, a remote Afghan province and notorious terrorist haven. But their journey to freedom will thrust them deeper into the Afghan conflict than they ever imagined. Battling hostile terrain and Islamic fighters, John and Dusty emerge the unlikely champions of an ancient community torn apart by al-Qaeda and western forces.

From ex-SAS soldier and bestselling author Bob Shepherd comes a modern day Afghan war epic inspired by Rudyard Kipling’s The Man Who Would Be King.

5.0 out of 5 stars High-power action, graceful writing April 30, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This surprising page-turner includes a wealth of local and technical detail, together with unusually fluid writing -- speaking probably both to the authors' evident expertise and to some serious reflection on past experiences. The plot zooms along, driven both by exciting events and, refreshingly, solid characterization.

Maybe not as self-consciously as Graham Greene (as another reviewer here suggests), but the authors deliver some philosophical punches (along with plenty of the regular kind of fisticuffs) that will keep you thinking well after you finish compulsively turning those pages: Stay with it through the very end, you will see for yourself!

5.0 out of 5 stars Authenticity cannot be faked April 30, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I've read Bob Shepherd's nonfiction and fiction, and I feel after reading "The Infidel" that I am becoming a full-fledged addict! Shepherd has an impeccable background for this genre, and the characters, the plot, the dialogue all ring true. This is not your schlocky beach read, folks. Oh, it's fun, to be sure, but as with all of Shepherd's writings, there's a deeper message afoot. If you like Graham Greene, you're going to like Bob Shepherd.

3.0 out of 5 stars 'Deep' military actioner August 12, 2010
Format:Kindle Edition
The first attempt (with help) at military fiction from the ex SAS author of The Circuit. It would be easy to add this to the list of ex Special Forces guys who have turned their hand to fiction (McNab, Ryan, Falconer etc), but this is actually a little different.

Two ex SAS Scots are on security detail in Afghanistan and are involved in a fire-fight for which they are being set up to take the blame, they head to a remote Afghan province in the hope they can clear their name. They end up in a village helping it defend itself and one of them starts to turn native.

This is a good attempt to write an intelligent novel which blends action, politics and an understanding of the complexity of Afghanistan. A country and an environment where nothing is as it seems. And it almost works, a slightly rushed ending and one or two areas that didn't quite sit right let it down a little. Likewise the relationship between the two Scots is presented as a close one but they seem to argue and disagree far more then two close friends would.

This is an uncomfortable and uncompromising novel which tries to rise a little above the standard fare and it is not bad, although not quite the finished product it could have been.
