Book Description

Katie Price is baffled when a man claiming to be her grandfather leaves her his entire estate in the Scottish Highlands. The bulk of the estate consists of a thriving whiskey distillery and a moldering castle, where the eccentric old man actually lived until his death. The Will stipulates that Katie must travel to Scotland and claim her inheritance in person.

As Katie’s stay extends from weeks into months, she uncovers the secret that led to her mother’s birth, and begins to unravel a two-hundred-fifty year-old mystery surrounding the beautiful, young wife of the last laird of Clan McBride. According to local lore, Isobel McBride vanished from the castle without a trace shortly after the Battle of Culloden, and some believe that her ghost still walks the battlements at night. A strange dream in Isobel’s tower room leads Katie to Isobel’s hiding place, where she discovers love letters from a man other than Isobel’s husband, his initials being the only clue to his identity.

As Katie begins to unearth the clues to Isobel’s fate, she embarks on a romantic journey of her own and finds a new life she never expected.

1.0 out of 5 stars Download a sample first.... June 20, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I love historical fiction, especially when there is a mysterious twist and multiple plot lines. I have read & love "The Thirteenth Tale", "The Forgotten Garden", "Wildflower Hill", "House at Riverton", "The Distant Hours", and I could go on and on; my point, this book seemed custom made for me. A modern day story that jumps back to mid-18th century Scotland. A family mystery. Scotland. A castle. What's not to love? After reading the description, I eagerly bought it. BIG MISTAKE! This book is poorly written, amatueur, and predictable. I couldn't even finish it. Before you buy, get the free sample.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love It February 16, 2012
By FRYEHI
Format:Kindle Edition
This book had everything I enjoy in a novel: romance, suspence and a touch of the supernatural. I love anything that takes place in Scotland and this was a double treat since there are parallel stories taking place in the Scotland of the present and the Scotland of the past. I particularly enjoyed the romance between Rory and isobel, which takes place against the backdrop of the Jacobite Rebellion of '45. The plicitical events provided an exciting background without dominating the story or shifting focus away from the main characters. I enjoyed all the intrigue and the descriptions of castle life in the 1700's. The modern day story was equally interesting with Katie searching for answes to her unexpected inheitance and discovering a cache of hidden letters that provided clues to the fate of Isobel, who was believed to have vanished without a trace. The two stories merged into a satisfying conclusion that left me wishing that the story would go on.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected... July 6, 2012
By emr
Format:Kindle Edition
I ordered the kindle version of this book and returned it almost immediately. Lately, I have been reading incredible books by S. Kearsley, page-turners, and very much enjoy Kearsley's style of writing, I'll just say.. sophisticated. "The Inheritance" was an Amazon recommendation for me because of the types of books I've been purchasing. However, there is no comparison. I'm not sure if Shapiro's book is her first, but the writing was kind of "simple" or "amateurish" and to me it was boring. The main character, speaking in the first person, even referenced an "unnamed" author whose books have recently put Scotland on the map for the tourist industry (I took that as a reference to Kearsley or another popular novelist). I am also distracted by the continuous need for grammatical and spelling editing. I guess by the 2nd chapter I knew I couldn't go any further. Perhaps her storyline was exceptional, but for me, I'll never know... first impressions count when sitting down and expecting a really good book. I am giving it 2 stars because of the storyline.. the plot was why I chose the book. I don't often take advantage of the free sample, because I've always ended up purchasing the book after reading the sample. This was a time when a sample would have been very helpful.

The Inheritance is a sophomoric, amateurish, third-rate novel rife with word, sentence structure and punctuation errors. The characters were one dimensional and uninteresting. Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars If you like stories within a story you'll like this book
I really enjoy books that tell two or more stories at the sametime; The inheritance is such a book. You get some history, mystery and a love story. What more can you ask for?

3.0 out of 5 stars Could be better
The basic concept of the story is good but what let it down was all the spelling errors. Also you would be reading a sentence and find that a simple word would be missing. Read more

More About the Author

There is nothing I enjoy more than a good book that takes me away from my everyday stresses and problems. I particularly like books that are set in the past, where the characters must navigate the volatile political climates of their time, while still managing to live, love, and cause mischief.

I've always had a particular fascination with the paranormal, and I explore some of these themes in my books. I believe that nothing is truly impossible. A true love can transcend space and time, and live on forever.
