Book Description

"I was eaten, plain and simple.
It felt like being burned alive, like every cell in my body was exploding. Then
everything stopped--my breathing, my heart, my pain. . ."

We all start out innocent but do not remain that way. In this modern-day adaptation of the Cupid and Psyche myth, Love is an incubus with a touch that can kill. Cristien LaRoche is terrifying, deceitful, beautiful and deadly. He is a medieval knight, a world-weary monster and a man cursed by his murderous past. He has come for Alexa Wyndham and nothing can stop him, not even himself. He knows he should leave her in peace. Alexa is everything he believes he can no longer be, pure, good, and happy, but he has been alone for so long, and she is the only thing he has ever loved.

Alexa Wyndham is a college student out on her own for the first time. She is an innocent in every sense of the word, her views of the world formed from the romantic poetry and literary novels she reads. Alexa thinks love should be a perfect dream. Then an evening out in Manhattan sets her on a nightmarish journey to capture Love itself. But is Alexa brave enough to redeem an incubus and set him free from the ageless evil that created him? When all the veils are torn down and the truth is revealed, will Alexa rise from the ashes like a phoenix or will love destroy her utterly?

The Innocent is a passionate, poetic, metaphysical fantasy about the transformative power of love. It will take the reader on a profound adventure from suffering to redemption, from innocence to experience. At its heart, The Innocent is an allegory about Love (Cupid) and the immortal Soul (Psyche).

Editorial Reviews

"...This "modern-day retelling of Beauty and the Beast" won't let you down.  The Innocent stays true to the formula of supernatural love stories, but includes enough mythology, poetry, unique elements, and humor to keep it fresh. . . .The Innocent is populated with well-developed characters who draw in the reader, making them want to know them better. Characters like Chandraswami, Lance, and the evil Lilith will bring the reader back for the second book in this series." Underground Book Reviews
"This is a love story in the style of Twilight. (Cristien and Alexa have) "a relationship to daydream about." The San Francisco Book Review

From the Author

The Innocent is a book about many different kinds of love: between a man and a woman, between friends, between a parent and a child and even the love of literature and poetry. It explores the positive and negative aspects of love.

Reminiscent of A.S. Byatt's Possession and Paulo Coelho's The Alchemist, The Innocent is also an allegory about the mythic journey through sorrow and death toward fulfillment and understanding. The Innocent follows the spiritual path of growth and enlightenment meted out by ancient religions such as Hinduism, Zen and mystery cults. It philosophizes about the illusion of good and evil, the nature of suffering, the necessity of truth, the deception of sin, and the importance of forgiveness.

The Innocent begins like the myth of Cupid and Psyche, with an "innocent girl" who is frightened by the man/beast that loves her. She then goes on the "road of trials" where she will be tested, put through terrible heartache and suffering until she becomes strong enough to emerge the "hero of her own life." Only then can she save herself and the man she loves from death and destruction. With the help of a street-smart incubus from the seventies, an ancient Indian prince and a Chinese empress, Cristien's and Alexa's journey will takes them beyond sorrow and death. They will emerge perfected, enlightened and ready for this treasure of all treasures. True love.
The Innocent is flavored with Gothic romance, humor, poetry, and quotes from some of the best love stories the world has to offer. It traces the themes of monstrous men and disguised lovers found in the archetypal myth of Cupid and Psyche through other great literature like Jane EyreWuthering Heights, Tristan and Iseult, Romeo and Juliet and many others.

There are questions in the back which makes this book good for Book Clubs or anyone who wants to ponder the mysteries of life, myth and the universe.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome, spelling binding. February 12, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
The Innocent is an exciting read about love and romance and how difficult and tragic this beautiful dream can often be.

The protagonist, Alexa Wyndham, is a good girl from Brooklyn with an unusual past. She understands the world through the lense of whatever she reads.

Finding herself alone in Manhattan the city is intimidating but exhilerating. For Saint Valentine’s Day she goes out on the town with her friends. She kisses passionately with a stranger and is inducted into a new world. This man wants her body, mind, spirit and flesh.

The only person she can rely on is the ancient Cristien LaRoche, but he too is a murderer. He may protect her from those who lust for her energy, but how can he protect her from herself?

The Innocent takes us through the journey of Alexa and Cristien and their rocky road to love. But can love conquer all, even death? The dialogue is witty and engaging and the plot is great. It is a very well written book and I will definitely be looking out for more from this author.

Totally reccomended. Just buy it. You won't regret it.

5.0 out of 5 stars So sweet May 14, 2014
By F.A.
Format:Kindle Edition
I truly enjoyed reading The Innocent: A Myth. At first I thought that the pacing was slow but as it turns out it isn't. It was written in a dual pov between Alexa and Cristien. Reading from both their perspectives made me liked them more especially Cristien. Alexa is your typical shy/ nerd girl and Cristien is that has that bad boy type but there's more to him especially when their relationship starts to bloom. The pacing between their romance was just so right and although I do understand Cristien's feelings when he gets frustrated but at the same time I'm glad he didn't cross the line with Alexa. You would think it started off as ordinary but there's more to the plot especially between the H/h.

I really like Alexa especially when she grew a backbone. I disliked her relationship with her mother who seemed to be a control freak and over the top protectiveness despite there being a reason for it. I loved the poems she write for Cristien. It was so romantic and when they started reading lines from other poems I thought they were really a match made in heaven.

I felt for Cristien the most because of his past especially that of Lily (I really hate her but I got m wish about her). Their first meeting turned out not to be so great but of course what he wants he gets, so he was able to do the dating thing that he never did before. His feelings for Alexa was confusing but he thought it was because of the Compulsion. But due to the help of Chandraswami his feelings for her was cleared up and he was able to make things right with her. When he was reminiscing about his past you could really feel his pain and his decisions of what he does now. It's nice that he changed and especially since he met Alexa because he started living.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book February 13, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Incredibly well written and engaging, this book sucked me in with the very first paragraph. The characters definitely pop and feel like real people that I would befriend. Alexa, the protagonist, is on scholarship in college and dedicated to excelling. She actually reminds me myself when I was in college, so it was easy to relate to her struggles. Sheltered as child, college life opens her eyes to the real world, especially when she meets girls that would rather her party instead of study. An intriguing situation, and Alexa acquiesces. A series of events lead her to her first experience with love...with someone who is not what he seems. Nonetheless, you'll find it beautiful, enchanting, and a bit dangerous. I must say, when I picked up this book, I was not expecting the supernatural treasure it turned out to be. The story was well done, with great characters, cool action scenes, and even cooler creatures. This is a must read for anyone into modern fantasy. What I enjoyed more than anything, was the original way the author weaved the supernatural characters into the story. AMAZING!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Innocent: A Myth April 29, 2014
I received this book for free through Goodreads First Reads - and I couldn't be more happy about it!

Let me start off by saying I love romance, myths, paranormal creatures and happy endings a little too much, so when I won this book I was really excited because I knew I would really like it. But when I was reading it, I knew it was already exceeding every expectation I had: I LOVED IT!

It was deep, poetic, sweet, romantic, breathtaking, beautiful, hilarious, heartbreaking, mind-blowing...
It made me laugh. SO MUCH!
It made me cry too. A lot.

The characters were all special in their own ways, each one of the personalities were very solid.
I really loved Lance, he was so sweet and funny! But of course I loved Cristien even more, he was just PERFECT!

There were moments when it was TOO MUCH for me and I had to stop reading, just so I could process what was happening, and I didn't want it to end! I tried to go slower sometimes but it was difficult because I had to know what was going to happen; I was afraid of the ending and I had my own theories, but I was wrong, of course, and it surprised me and made me super happy!

This is one of my favorite books ever and I will read it again soon!!

More About the Author

I write about love and its power to create and destroy. I like writing complex stories with metaphysical and philosophical themes. I also have a dark sense of humor. I like the mud and the Lotus. I create characters who grow, feel deep passion, and like classic literary references.

I am a passionate reader of classics(Bronte, Radcliffe, Shakespeare, Poe, O'Henry and many more.) I love Medieval Romances like "Erec and Enide," "The Knight of the Cart," "The Knight with the Lion." I also enjoy Fantasy and Sci-fi (Vonnegut, Herbert, McKillip, Asimov to name a few favorites.)

I hope you enjoy my books, that they make you laugh and cry. I hope they make you believe that good, light, love or whatever you call the best in the world, will find a way to rise above that which is not.
