The Insanity of Obedience is companion piece to Ripken's previous work, The Insanity of God. Although the two works cover some of the same ground, each book deserves a reading. The Ripken's felt called by God to go overseas as missionaries. When they responded to that call, they had no idea that they would eventually end up working in Somalia. In that lawless land, their faith took a major nose dive. Their losses were huge. Eventually they came home wounded emotionally and spiritually with a huge question mark hanging over their heads: can faith survive under intense persecution? They set out on a quest to find the answer to that question, eventually interviewing 600 Christians who had endured under some form of persecution. That is the subject of Ripken's first book. His second one, The Insanity of Obedience examines what it looks like to go out as sheep among wolves and gives story after story on how to carry out the Great Commission - even when obedience looks crazy from a human perspective.

Recommended reading for anyone who has a desire to grow in their relationship to God and who desires to be obedient to His call. This book is a challenge that will break your heart as you read of the persecution of believers and may change your worldview toward persecution of believers.

I really do not take the time to write reviews unless something profoundly moves me for either the good or the bad. This has got to be one of THE MOST invaluable books I have purchased and read in a long time (and I read at least 4 new books a month). What turned out to be a seemingly failed experience working in foreign missions has led to the most useful and needed information for future missions workers and anyone feeling the burden to reach the nations. There are a few things I differ on in my view/opinion, but all in all this book is an answer to prayer.

Ripken presents a timely book on the cultural differences of various people groups across the globe. He provides great insight into how to reach and disciple these groups with the gospel. I have already felt and known that God has been reaching these people without our help, but what I needed to know was how to find and further disciple these believers. Ripken explains how different culture groups perceive and come to the knowledge of Christ, which is vastly different from Americans. He also shares those things that are strong barriers to the spreading of the gospel and how we can begin to address and bring down those barriers.

He appropriately challenges the faulty beliefs and assumptions of the American church. Thankfully I am blessed to be among a group of Spirit-led believers that are ahead of the curve in this aspect. However, I cannot express enough how VITALLY important this book is. This is one of those few books I will recommend to everyone I know. I believe this should be required reading for anyone involved in missions work.

This will be one of those books I will reread and refer to again and again. This is a book filled with hands-on, practical, and useful information. Thank you Ripken for such a needed book. Oh and this is one of the best titles, if not THE best title I have ever seen. True spirit-led obedience to Christ is perceived as absolute insanity. Love it!

Liked this title much better than the title of the first book on this subject. An excellent read. Amazed at so much research going into this book.

Insanity is required! But without it life is dull. May God make us sensibly crazy for Him first and then for His great purpose!!!

Nik Ripken has shared an amazing look at persecution and the attitudes of the persecuted. Their response to persecution is nothing like I thought it would be and has changed my attitude toward Christianity in the States. Evey Christian should read this book. God's church in the USA would be better for it.
