About the Author

What began as a knack for helping friends, family members, and classmates through personal struggles has grown into a lifelong career for Jim Moorhead, America's crisis advisor. Jim's humanity and passion for showing others how to confidently navigate through difficult situations is nothing short of remarkable.

Jim underwent his own personal crisis when he lost a statewide race that would have launched his political career. A few years later he accepted an extremely promising job, but the dot-com bust drove him even deeper into crisis. Drawing from a career spent helping corporations overcome large-scale upheavals, Jim developed a simple, actionable four-step system to help himself and others clear the types of professional and personal hurdles that many individuals encounter during their lives.

A graduate of Harvard College and Columbia Law School, Jim has coached hundreds of employees, business leaders, and political candidates on how to confront and conquer professional and personal disasters. An inspiring speaker as well as a respected crisis adviser, Jim regularly provides commentary on business and legal crises and has appeared on CNN, CNBC, MSNBC, Fox News, Fox Business, Court TV, and America's Talking.

Jim's work history as a reporter, investment banker, federal prosecutor, and political candidate gives him a breadth of experience that enables him to tailor his crisis management advice to individuals in all fields. He is currently a partner at a major Washington, DC, law firm, where he cofounded and cochairs the company's crisis management practice. With The Instant Survivor: Right Ways to Respond When Things Go Wrong, Jim has written the book on personal and professional crisis management and has become one of the country's most sought-after crisis management speakers.

More About the Author

An experienced crisis advisor, Jim Moorhead is a partner in a major Washington, D.C. law firm, where he co-chairs the firm's crisis management practice. Over the last thirty years, he has addressed crises as a political consultant advising national candidates, an investment banker helping Fortune 500 companies defend against hostile takeovers, and as national legal counsel to major companies and their executives facing regulatory, congressional and criminal investigations, civil litigation, and media scrutiny. A leading legal trade magazine recently profiled his firm's crisis management practice, which he co-founded.

He has triumphed over his own crises of losing a statewide political campaign and being a high-tech casualty.

He is an accomplished public speaker, drawing on his skills as a trial lawyer, former federal prosecutor, statewide political candidate, and TV commentator. For the last 20 years, he has been a frequent commentator on business and legal issues and major trials on CNN, CNBC, MSNBC, Fox Business News, Court TV and Washington, D.C. and Baltimore network affiliates. He was a regular guest host on an America's Talking show about waste in the federal government. He is frequently quoted in the media on business and legal issues.

I have never written a review before, but I feel compelled to tell people to read this book. I know its silly to think Moorehead wrote the book for me, but Its simple, practical message, its wonderfully clear step by step tips for dealing with a crisis, its anecdotes and numerous examples, resonated in a way that made me wonder if the author had been peeking in my window. For me, Step Three on "Standing Tall" particularly resonated in such a simple way that I hate to use the word profound, but I have to: It was profoundly helpful. I know that others will have the same reaction: "The Instant Survivor" was written just for you. Read it, because it will help.

A quote from author Jim Moorhead's book states my comment best, "Control the crisis, not visa versa." This book is definitely a keeper!

The Instant Survivor is a must read. The book contains seemingly simple but profoundly effective ideas. I read it with the cynicism that many people have who are reasonably adept at dealing with their problems. Having an OK track record made seeking outside help, especially before the fact, seem unlikely to be productive. I was wrong. Jim Moorhead has conceived of a system though which you can survive serious problems, a structure upon which you can respond to crises - personal and professional alike. The Instant Survivor is a professional road map to get you through tough times no matter where you're coming from. It will not make you a better person - it will make you a more successful person by equipping you to respond to crises more successfully. The results will certainly speak for themselves. The Instant Survivor is now required reading for the people I care about. It should be an essential element in everyone's toolbox.

Jim Moorhead and the "Instant Survivor" is much more than learning how to handle a business crisis. Jim has a way of explaining items clearly and simply in such a manner that the reader can apply it to every aspect of their life. Jim draws his understanding from being a great listener and wonderful instructor; always patient and able to see many points of view. This book will be one that is re-read for many years to come.

I found this book at the precise time I needed its advice. With many life-altering events occurring one right after another, I was overwhelmed. The methodology for working through these events was clear, concise and, best of all, incredibly helpful. I recommend this book whether your life is sailing along smoothly or riding big waves of uncertainty.

The Instant Survivor is a guide on how to deal with any crisis, professional or personal, and come out on top and a stronger, more empowered person because of it. A MUST read for anyone who wants to control their circumstances, not the other way around.

The Instant Survivor is a book that I wish existed on July 5th 2010. That's the day I lost my mom, brother and sister-in-law in a plane crash. I stumbled my way through grief, as if under water, for more than a year. As I read it now, I can clearly see how having a plan, a system, to make your way through a crisis could have made a profound difference - not just in the speed with which I would have bounced back, but in how you I chose to interpret and frame my life going forward. Better late than never though!

The author compellingly guides the reader through a comprehensive, but by no means overwhelming, system for facing whatever challenge you have and emerging out the other side stronger, better. He peppers each stage with real-life stories of celebrities, business stars, and "normal folks" too, which pull you in and illustrate his points beautifully. They keep the pace quick and ensure key points stick.

I particularly loved the survivor questions and the workshops built into each chapter of the book. I scribbled away in my notebook as I read and felt empowered and refreshed by the end of the book. Far from just a book for business crises, it's a must-have step-by-step guide to navigating any tough spot in life - a resource you'll turn to again and again I'm sure.

I recommend this book for guidance in tough times. The text is graphically well designed and planned out methodically. The author's words are organized in a clear and concise way. It is a small and powerful companion; just the right size for your briefcase or pocketbook! The part about "discounting" is oh so true. It is human nature to fall into a state of denial when a crisis occurs, and Jim Moorhead will help the reader see clearly. He covers the expected topics of job loss, divorce, death, disaster, etc but also includes wise and sound advice on finances and family dynamics. It is an easy read and full of gems of advice.....even in the best of times it is important to keep a clear head and plan. Thanks to the author for finding a topic that is perfect for these times and creating a book that answers many questions that are not covered in traditional and even alternative schools. It is much more than common sense. Digest the contents of this book, and the reader can avoid the trials and errors of many dysfunctional workplaces......in a creative way. It is not always smooth sailing, but we are now ready to sail the stormy seas!
