"The Intelligent Divorce" is a smart and intelligent guide for people contemplating or in the midst of a family separation process involving their children. Like the classic "We're Still Family" by Constance Ahrons, Dr. Banschick's book serves as a wise roadmap for this process. Most children can and do thrive even as their family is changing. Though divorce is rarely easy, it does not have to lead to family breakdown, emotional breakdown for parents or psychopathology in children. The message here is that divorce does not itself "destroy" families or children. However, it makes a difference how the parents prioritize their children's needs in the process. Children are not collateral nor property to be negotiated in the marital estate. Nor should children be used to turn one parent against the other. If parents can use their own emotional intelligence the family has a chance to re-emerge from the changes that divorce brings with it. What this book emphasizes is the need to understand the children's "rights" no matter how much of an emotional stretch this may be for the stressed parent. It has been said that no one is at their best during a divorce. Getting support and developing one's own awareness during this painful process goes a long way in ensuring that all members of the family survive intact. Highly recommend!

My friend recently purchased Dr. Banschick's book on divorce and keeping your kids first. A lot of people forget to care for their children properly during divorce, and Dr. Banschick aims to rectify that. The book covers everything from communication with your child to your child's bill of rights. Children are the unintentional victims of adults' actions. With this book, my friend really gained a lot of insight into how her divorce was affecting her children, as well as herself. If you know someone who is in the middle of a divorce, or who is struggling from a recent divorce, recommend this book to them- I'm sure it will do a lot of good for them and their relationship with their kids.
The book is aimed for divorced adults with children, and there is a lot of information in there. It is coherent and easy to understand. He avoids medical jargon so that his points come across crystal clear.

The Intelligent Divorce: Because Your Kids Come First, book one of a series by Dr. Mark Banschick, has takes more than a decade of professional knowledge, training and energy and synthesized it down to 200 pages. In developing the Intelligent Divorce Model, Dr. Banschick participated in and reviewed hundreds of case studies and he provides us with many real life examples from the perspective of a trained clinician. This awesome resource book is full of valuable information and sound advice presented in every day language (no psycho-babble). The book and the whole concept of the need for an Intelligent Divorce is sure to resonate with anyone who is interested in keeping children out of the middle of unhealthy separation and divorce situations.

The Intelligent Divorce has the perfect blend of useful information and sound advice, while often teaching by example and through practical comparisons. Most would agree that sometimes it is necessary to become familiar with, or at least recognize, ineffective ways of doing things in order to improve. The same is often true when trying to become a more effective co-parent and communicator. This book paves the way and demonstrates exactly how to do that while truly keeping the child's best interests first and foremost, always. Dr. Banschick recognizes that this stuff isn't easy, but he shows you how to be "on top of your game" even under the most difficult of circumstances. The subtitle says it all, "Because Your Kids Come First."

If this book is the first of Dr. Banschick's new series, I strongly suggest that after you read this one that you pre-order the next book ASAP !

Having "been there and done that" divorce, I can say that there are many things that my ex-husband and I could have done better. Not so much in the divorce, but how and what our kids were told. "The Intelligent Divorce - Because Your Kids Come First" by Dr. Mark R. Banschick and David Tabatsky is a MUST READ! This book is intelligently written and simply put. In a sentence, we must all "preserve out children's innocence".

The book is a quick read yet full of information, helpful hints and work pages. There is nothing unrealistic about the contents and suggestions made by the authors. Every parent going through divorce needs to "preserve the innocence of their children" and this book will help and show you how you can work towards that.

If only this book was around 5 years ago!
