About the Actor

John Joseph Feild (born circa 1978 1979), known professionally as J. J. Feild, is an Anglo-American actor. He has appeared in several film and television roles, including the role of Simon Doyle in the television series Poirot's version of Death on the Nile, and as Paul Osbourne in Marple The Pale Horse. He has also appeared in Northanger Abbey as Henry Tilney and in the televised version of The Ruby in the Smoke as Frederick Garland. His film roles include playing the younger version of Michael Caine's character in Last Orders and playing the role of Heinz in Telstar. In 2008, he made his West End debut in Ring Round the Moon. In 2011, Feild co-starred in Captain America: The First Avenger as James Montgomery Falsworth. The same year, he starred alongside Benedict Cumberbatch in Third Star and appeared in the BBC adaptation of Sarah Waters' The Night Watch. The actor will appear as Henry Nobley in Jerusha Hess's adaptation of Shannon Hale's novel Austenland in 2012. Feild began filming a role in Not Safe for Work in 2012.

Janet McTeer (born 5 August 1961) is an English actress. McTeer's television work includes the BBC production of Nigel Nicolson's book Portrait of a Marriage in which she played Vita Sackville-West and the popular ITV series The Governor written by Lynda La Plante. She made her screen debut in Half Moon Street, a 1986 film based on a novel by Paul Theroux. In 1991, she appeared in Catherine Cookson'sThe Black Velvet Gown, with Bob Peck and Geraldine Somerville; this won the International Emmy award for best drama. She appeared in the 1992 film version of Wuthering Heights (co-starring Juliette Binoche and Ralph Fiennes) and the 1995 film Carrington (which starred Emma Thompson and Jonathan Pryce) as Vanessa Bell. In 1996, McTeer garnered critical acclaim - and both the Laurence Olivier Theatre Award and Critics' Circle Theatre Award for her performance as Nora in a West End production of Henrik Ibsen's A Doll's House. The following year, the production transferred to Broadway, and McTeer received a Tony Award, Theatre World Award, and Drama Desk Award as Best Actress in a Play. During the show's run, McTeer was interviewed by Charlie Rose on his PBS talk show, where she was seen by American filmmaker Gavin O'Connor, who, at the time, was working on a screenplay about a single mother's cross-country wanderings with her pre-teen daughter. He was determined that she star in the film. When prospective backers balked at her relative anonymity in the US, he produced the film himself. Tumbleweeds proved to be a 1999 Sundance Film Festival favourite, and McTeer's performance won her a Golden Globe as Best Actress and Academy Award and Screen Actors Guild nominations in the same category.

Brenda Fricker (born February 17, 1945) is an Irish actress of theatre, film and television. She has appeared in more than 30 films and television roles. In 1990, she became the first Irish actress to win the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for My Left Foot.

Product Description

From IFC Films and celebrated Danish filmmaker Kristian Levring (The King Is Alive) comes THE INTENDED, a moodily atmospheric, sexually charged epic that has been lauded a taut noirish thriller that unfolds in a fever of firelit ambience (Village Voice). Inspired by cinema s controversial Dogme 95 movement (co-founded by Levring and such acclaimed auteurs as Dogville s Lars von Trier), THE INTENDED has drawn comparisons to the literary masterworks of Joseph Conrad and Tennessee Williams.

In 1924, the strong and idealistic Sarah (co-writer Janet McTeer of Tumbleweeds) and her younger lover Hamish (JJ Field of Poirot: Death on the Nile) flee the depression of post-war Europe, travelling deep into the Malaysian jungle to earn their fortune at an ivory trading post. Instead of an exotic retreat, however, the two encounter an oppressively small colony where there is no escape when the river runs dry. Despite their best intentions, the influence of the couple s high hopes and obvious love for each other unleashes upon the community a downward spiral of greed, murder, and madness: a lyrical tragedy where everyone is the victim of each other s broken dreams.

Gripping, intimate, and heavily stylized, THE INTENDED co-stars Olimpia Dukakis (Armistead Maupin s Tales of the City), Brenda Fricker (My Left Foot), and Tony Maudsley (Bright Young Things).

3.0 out of 5 stars EXOTIC JUNGLE NOIR January 14, 2005
From the Danish Film Institute, INTENDED (New Video Group) is Kristian Levring's sexually charged, jungle noir set in 1924 Malaysia. Fleeing eastern European depression, high-minded Sarah (co-writer Janet Mcteer) and her younger lover Hamish arrive at a small ivory trading post deep in the jungle where they hope to earn their fortune for a new life.

But the colony is an oppressive prison for which there is literally no escape during the months when the river runs dry.

This exotic melodrama tracks the rippling effect -- greed, madness and murder -- that Sarah and Hamish unleash on themselves and this remote community of lost souls.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good acting but the story is too somber and gloomy. February 5, 2005
This 2002 film is set in an unnamed dark outpost in Borneo in 1924. The small group of Brits there run an ivory trading business. Into this outpost comes a young man and his fiancé, played by Janet McTeer. The fact that they are not married and she is quite a bit older than him is not lost on the small group which consists of a matriarchal woman who runs the business, her demented adult son and his aging and slightly crazy former nanny played by Olympia Dukakis. There's also a priest who seems to have spent too many years there and a criminal-type nephew who would like to run the business. The setting is dark and mysterious and the story is somber. There's cruelty, murder, insanity and suicide without one bit of lightness in the constant gloom. Yes, the acting is excellent and that is what made me keep watching, but it's such a dismal view of the world that there is no way I can recommend this film to anyone. See it at your own risk.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great film. This one draws you in. February 8, 2009
By Dave
This film really succeeds in drawing you in. Intriguing yet somewhat disturbing. Interesting story, good acting, and very atmospheric. I felt like I was there, experiencing the film with the characters. Although it wasn't my favorite film, I was very impressed by how it was done. It was like I was "reading" it. Definitely worth a watch. The film takes place in a hot, sweaty location and I really felt like I needed a shower halfway through the film - they really make you feel like you're there.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting March 18, 2014

I liked the movie, but thought that there could have been more interaction between the couple. I would have liked to have more of a backstory and more on what happened when they left.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good film with great performances March 13, 2014

This is a good film worth watching for the performances. I agree that it is a twisted story with unexpected turns, but it has some meaningful themes if you like analyzing films. Its ending is not completely bleak as others have described. (Maybe I'm just an optimist?) Again, brilliant performances that will keep you watching.
